Welcome to MGLA:
Welcome to 2nd grade!
We are so excited that you will be part of our 2nd grade MGLA family this year! We have a fun and
exciting year planned. Below is a brief explanation of what your child will be learning this year. We look
forward to working with you and your child for the 2014-2015 school year.

What will your child learn this year?

Literacy:
In grade two, students will continue to build important reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills.
They will think, talk, and write about what they read in variety of texts, such as stories, books, articles, and
other sources of information including the Internet. In their writing, students will learn how to develop a topic
and strengthen their skills by editing and revising.
Mathematics:
In grade 2, students will continue to build on important mathematical skills with a focus on four critical
areas: (1) extending understanding of base-ten notation; (2) building fluency with addition and subtraction; (3)
using standard units of measure; and (4) describing and analyzing shapes.
Science:
In second grade, students will explore various exciting topics in science such as: matter, properties and
change, forces and motion, sound, Earth systems, structures and functions of living organisms, evolution and
genetics.
Social Studies:
During social studies instruction, students will explore aspects of self, others, families and communities

Global connections:
The second grade team has decided to subscribe to the Scholastics News: Weekly Reader. Each child will
get their very own copy each week! The purpose of the weekly reader is to build and reinforce science and
social studies skills, teach new vocabulary, and make learning fun. Every issue is filled with vibrant photos and
nonfiction text to support what your child will be learning in class. The subscription costs $6 per child, which
will cover 32 issues.
We will be completing a book study called, Ruby Bridges. This is a story about an important historical
event that took place in the 1960s. Ruby, a young African-American girl, entered a whites-only school in New
Orleans. Even though she had to pass through crowds of angry protesters, Ruby bravely walked into the school.
Every day for months, Ruby persevered. White parents pulled their children out of the school, and Ruby and her
teacher were alone in the classroom. Still, Ruby and her family would not give in. During this unit, we will
discuss how Ruby Bridges fights for equality and how it affects us today. Students will describe how the
achievements of African Americans, of the past and present, changed society.
This year our students will be studying the continent of South America. Students will be required to research
a country in South America and create a tri-fold presentation to display for this years Global Symposium. More
details regarding this project will be sent home at a later date.
Required materials:
Each teacher will be sending out their own supply list.
Daily preparation and communication:
Students are to be in class, in uniform by 9:15 every day. Students need to bring pencils to write with daily.
Students will also need to bring either their agenda (Alexander & Campfield) or their Parent Communication
Folders daily (Carver). The agendas and the Parent Communication Folder is to record their behavior daily.
Please sign and return the agenda or folder every day. You may also write notes or questions in these. We want
you to know that one of our most important goals this year is to keep the lines of communication open with you.
Students will be graded based on their mastery of each standard that will appear on their report card. I
calculate mastery level based on multiple forms of assessments. Grades will be based on Reading 3D data,
informal observations, running records, unit tests, and homework.
Tutoring schedule:
There will be a 2nd grade team member available for tutoring on Tuesday morning from 8:00 am to 9:00 am.
It is not a before school program. Tutoring will be for students who are committed to improving their reading or
mathematical skills.
