Blakely





Edward J. Blakely, the Center for Sustainable Suburban Development's namesake, is an
internationally known educator and researcher on urban and suburban issues.
Dr. Blakely was born in San Bernardino and educated at San Bernardino High School,
Valley College and the University of California, Riverside. In addition to his scholarly
pursuits at UC Riverside, Dr. Blakely quarterbacked an undefeated UCR football team
and was a member of the basketball and track teams. He was named co-athlete of the year
in 1959 for the University of California, and later was inducted into UCR's Athletic Hall
of Fame.


Dr. Blakely subsequently earned a master's degree in Latin American history at UC
Berkeley, an MBA in Organization Management at Pasadena Nazarene College and a
doctorate in Education and Management at UCLA.
He is a leading scholar in the fields of planning, infrastructure, transportation and local
economic development, and his expertise is worldwide. He has been an advisor to local
and regional governments in Korea, Japan, Australia, India, New Zealand, Vietnam,
Turkey
and Armenia

NFL Voluntary Coach-Mentor 1970-2003

I have been associated with professional football for
nearly 50 years as a player, coach and game official, but
all as a volunteer.

I reside most of the year now in Sydney, Australia where
I am active with New South Wales Gridiron Football as a
Game Official. I am now 75 and have been engaged in
football since I was 8 years old. Fortunately, I have
escaped major injury.

My football career was lucky and wonderful. I was
Captain of my High School and College teams and
fortunate enough to be inducted into the UC Riverside
Hall of Fame for Football and named as co-Athlete of the
Year in 1959 for the University of California campuses.

I am proud now to give back as a game official after
working with football teams post college and brief try
out with the Green Bay Packers in 1960. Military duty as
an Officer gave me an opportunity to continue with
football as a coach of football and basketball.


Post military I became an Executive at Pacific Telephone
where I hooked up with Lynn Aplenap a kicking coach
with the Rams and assisted him in coaching
championship Pop Warner Football teams that put
several players in the pros later like Kermit Johnson.
Coaching became mentor/coaching for me when I
became an academic with a PhD.

My volunteer coaching assignments post PhD at Pitt
with Jonny Majors allowed me to go to pre-season
camp with the Steelers where I met and continued
relationships with many players especially Lynn
Swann.

Later I volunteer coached at UC Davis for Jim Sochor
who had Mike Bellotti among other son his staff. I
coached D backs and went to 49er camps. I came to be
a personal mentor for 49er and Raiders like Ronnie
Lott and Vince Evans.

My coaching/mentor role continued with the 49ers as a
pre-season and I volunteer coached special teams for
Joe Kapp at UC Berkeley.

My role as mentor was enhanced in 1995 when I took
my last teaching assignment at USC where Mike
Garrett was Athletic Director. USC Alums like Vince
Evans were and are post football colleagues. My
expertise in real estate development has kept me
around players who were not high profile NFL stars.

I maintain contact with many players from the earliest
days as well as recent retirees.
