THE AMERICAN ASSEMBLY
UNCOMMON
RACE AND AMERICAS FUTURE
COMMON
GROUND
Even after the election of Americas first black
president, racial inequality continues to plague
the nation. Barack Obamas election ushered in a
new era of hope, but measurable racial change is
still elusive: We still fail to graduate more than
one-quarter of young black men from high school,
and nearly a thrid of all African-American, Latino,
and Southeast Asian American children live in
poverty. By 2050, the UNited States is projected
to be a nation with no single racial group as a
majority. It is no longer just the future of racial
minorities that is worrisome; the nation itself faces
peril if the new, broader majority fails.
In this prescient work, now fully updated with
fresh data, extensive reviisions, and new contri-
butions from Van Jones, Jed Horne, James Allen
Crouch, Robin Toma, and Dwayne Marsh, the
authors tackle pressing issues head on. Address-
ing evolving and emerging topics such as the
future of work and metropolitan communities,
immigrant integration, and effective educational
structures, Uncommon Common Ground:
Race and Americas Future renews its call
for a new kind of leadership to guide the next
generation forward to a fully inclusive America.
