My Florida Educational Accomplished Practice (FEAPS) has been a goal I have been

working on for 2 semesters now, from the moment I started to intern. Through the process of
taking several semesters worth of pre-certification educational classes I have noticed one over-
arching theme that I feel is key in providing and maintaining a classroom focused on equity and
academic achievement: Community! Creating a classroom community where students feel safe
and comfortable to be participate in class, bridging, not just ethnic cultures, but also the culture
of different exceptionalities, helps to ensure the smooth running of the classroom and minimize
interference with learning activities Rothstein-Fisch, C., & Trumball, E. (2009).
Last year I wanted to decrease the lack of respect that students had for one another. I
introduced a strategy I learned from a previous instructor called yellow folders where students
write pleasant things about one another. This year I am using a strategy of using information that
I have learned about students that are different that the student norm and with permission,
sharing that info with other students, promoting empathy, intro and retrospection. I have found
that a few students enjoy using their native language from time to time, so I have shared how to
say good morning and good bye to their peers. While giving a lesson on the life of a Muslim girl,
a couple of students shared that they were also Muslim. I asked both students to inform their
parents of the lesson and see if there was anything they would like to share with us the following
day. This was another opportunity to provide the students insight to a life different than their
own but still the life of someone they know and are possible friends with, while respecting the
students family and cultural background.
For the rest of the semester, my plan is to work on the students oral and written
communication skills. I have already started working in this through monitoring students
interactions during transitions between classes and while walking through the halls; while
providing feedback to students ways to properly show respect and use a modicum of manners.
As for the written communication, I am currently reviewing students reading logs on the days
that I intern. During these reviews I leave notes on ways of improving written skills and
encourage students to reply back to feedback given. These reading logs are also updated and kept
by the students as a way to self-monitor, and provide insight into the students reading and
writing habits. I will utilize these logs to model acceptable writing habits.
