Reading Difficulties
Nelson Rockefeller (41

Vice President of the United
States), Henry Winkler (actor, director, producer), Jay Leno
(comedian and late-night talk show host), Tom Cruise
(actor), Charles Schwab (founder of the Schwab Stock
Brokerage Company) are just a few individuals who had
problems in learning to read, some very severe.
Reading difficulties can be caused or affected by many
different factors.
By working together, we help struggling readers.
How Can You Help?
Research shows that parent involvement plays a huge
part in the success of a child in school.
Help in building confidence
Have a conversation. Evidence shows that everyday
conversations build vocabulary and background
knowledge. This in turn helps children when reading.
Reading at home or on the go: signs, menus,
magazines, comics, poems, recipes, etc.
How Can You Help?

Provide time, opportunities, and reading materials. In a
classic study, Anderson, Wilson, and Fielding (1988) found
a significant relationship between the amount of reading
schoolchildren do and their reading achievement
(Gambrell, Malloy, & Mazzoni, 2011, p.24).
Discuss what your child is reading: make predictions of
what will happen next, ask them to summarize their
reading, ask what the characters are like, make
connections between what they read and your childs life
and experiences.

Help with homework: review, reteach, praise, provide a
quiet atmosphere
Find math in everyday situations: measuring, adding,
cooking, etc.
