Mrs. Myers I live in Deshler with my husband and 3 children. I received my bachelors in Elementary Education with a concentration in Mathematics from BGSU. I received my Reading Endorsement and Masters in Reading from BGSU. Title 1 Funding Funding to our district is based on the amount of free and reduced lunches. Placement in the Title 1 program has nothing to do with income. Important Components of Title 1 To create a positive connection between home and school: 1.Family Literacy and Math Night 2. Compact 3. How It Works at Malinta- Grelton 3 rd Grade Reading additional reading time (45 minutes) in my classroom with a small group. 3 rd Grade Math co-teaching within Miss Wymers classroom. 4 th Grade Reading co-teaching within Mr. Frucheys classroom. 4 th Grade Math small class taught by Mrs. Myers. 3 rd Grade Reading Core Reading is taught in the homeroom. Extra 45 minutes of reading time is spent in my classroom: 15 minutes on Academic Associates phonics program 30 minutes working on other Reading skills 3 rd Grade Reading continued Focus on: I. Fluency poetry, repeated readings, choral reading, wide reading, etc. II. Vocabulary tactile, meaning, automatic word recognition III. Affective building confidence and enjoyment in reading IV. Comprehension reinforcement of skills taught in core reading V. Phonics phonics rules practice 4 th Grade Math Better student to teacher ratio Easier to adapt lessons to meet the needs of the students Easier to include hands-on activities 3 rd Math and 4 th Reading These classes are all co-taught with students remaining in their assigned classrooms. Classes are made up of mixed ability students. 4 th Grade Reading is co-taught with Mr. Fruchey. 3 rd Grade Math is co-taught with Miss Wymer. Reading Difficulties Nelson Rockefeller (41 st Vice President of the United States), Henry Winkler (actor, director, producer), Jay Leno (comedian and late-night talk show host), Tom Cruise (actor), Charles Schwab (founder of the Schwab Stock Brokerage Company) are just a few individuals who had problems in learning to read, some very severe. Reading difficulties can be caused or affected by many different factors. By working together, we help struggling readers. How Can You Help? Research shows that parent involvement plays a huge part in the success of a child in school. Help in building confidence Have a conversation. Evidence shows that everyday conversations build vocabulary and background knowledge. This in turn helps children when reading. Reading at home or on the go: signs, menus, magazines, comics, poems, recipes, etc. How Can You Help? Continued Provide time, opportunities, and reading materials. In a classic study, Anderson, Wilson, and Fielding (1988) found a significant relationship between the amount of reading schoolchildren do and their reading achievement (Gambrell, Malloy, & Mazzoni, 2011, p.24). Discuss what your child is reading: make predictions of what will happen next, ask them to summarize their reading, ask what the characters are like, make connections between what they read and your childs life and experiences. How Can You Help? Continued Help with homework: review, reteach, praise, provide a quiet atmosphere Find math in everyday situations: measuring, adding, cooking, etc. http://www.MrsMarieMyers.weebly.com Ohio Achievement Assessment (OAA) 3 rd and 4 th Grade students take the Reading and Math tests Testing will begin in April Students are assessed on the new Common Core State Standarrds Score of 400 or higher is considered proficient 3rd Grade Reading Guarantee Need a score of 394 or higher on the Ohio Achievement Assessment to progress on to the 4th grade. OAA How can you help? Help with OAA related homework at home when possible. Get a good nights sleep before test days Eat a good breakfast the morning of the test Encourage your child to do their best and praise their hard work Express confidence in their abilities let them know you believe in them The PARCC tests will take place in February and May this year. These tests will be entirely online. This is new for all of us.
