Reflective Analysis of Portfolio Artifact

Rationale/Reflection
NAEYC Standard:
STANDARD 6. BECOMI NG A PROFESSI ONAL
Candidates prepared in early childhood degree programs identify and conduct themselves as members of the
early childhood profession. They know and use ethical guidelines and other professional standards related to
early childhood practice. They are continuous, collaborative learners who demonstrate knowledgeable,
reflective and critical perspectives on their work, making informed decisions that integrate knowledge from a
variety of sources. They are informed advocates for sound educational practices and policies.
Brief Description of Evidence:
During the summer semester of 2014 during my ECED 255 Generalist Practicum course, I
collaboratively worked with a partner to create a semester project which would benefit the childcare where I
completed my practicum experience and get the community involved. We created a plan of ideas to create a
fundraiser for the childcare while reaching out to the community, and making informed decisions about the
needs of the program and the essential steps to take to complete the project. Our project was designed around
selling hamburgers, popsicles, cookie-wiches, and a dunk tank for kids to play. We worked together to market
our ideas and bring the childcare families in to be a part of the community outreach. In addition we created a
PowerPoint to display our budget and a final summary of the project.
Analysis of What I Learned:
Through completion of this project I was able to use positive interaction and social skills to work
collaboratively with a partner with the same interest for community outreach. I now know the importance of
working with someone who can help create a life changing project to support the families of a childcare.
Through this artifact I have learned how to integrate the business side of things with fundraising efforts. I
learned how to create a budget and work with other professionals to be involved in the community. This project
is something I used as a focus of the project approach. I can integrate knowledge of working with a partner and
creating a project through math, science and other various subjects which may be used in the classroom.
How This Artifact Demonstrates my Competence on the NAEYC Standard:
This project is just one of many projects in which I worked collaboratively with a partner to create a
community outreach project for a facility at which we were involved with. We showed our competence of
identifying and conducting ourselves as professionals in the community. The NAEYC Standard helped me
relate to the understanding of making informed decisions of what must be understood in order to complete the
standard and my findings throughout the project.
