What is a monocot?

1. A monocot has
petals in multiples
of three.
2. Vascular bundles
are scattered.
3. Leaves have
parallel veins.
4. The roots are
fibrous and spread
out.

Monocot leaves have parallel veins

Monocot plants have 1 seed part.

Monocots have fibrous roots.

What is a dicot?
1. A dicot has petals
in multiples of 4-5.
2. Vascular bundles
are in a ring.
3. Leaves are netlike.
4. The roots are a
taproot.

Dicot leaves have netted veins

Dicot seeds have 2 seed parts

What is a root?
1. Why are roots important to a plant?
a. anchor (hold) plant into ground.
b. gathers water and soil nutrients for plant
to use.
2. Name some roots that people eat.
a. carrots c. potato
b. turnips

Root tissues: Xylem

Xylem: This
tissue is part of
the vascular
bundle that
gathers water for
the plant.

Root tissues: Phloem

Phloem: This
tissue is part of
the vascular
bundle that
helps food
travel.

Circle the xylem and phloem and

describe what they do.

This is what xylem and phloem

tissue. What do they do for the
plant.

What is a seed?
Every seed is a tiny plant or
embryo with leaves,
stems, and root parts
waiting for the right
things to happen to make
it germinate and grow.

Endosperm

Seeds are protected by a

coat.

What is an endosperm?
The seed also contains a
short-term food supply
called the endosperm. It is
used by the embryo to
help its growth.

What is the function of a seed?

A packaged little plant
with food around it
(endosperm) and a
covering protecting it
(seed coat).
It is also a way for the
genetic information of a
plant to travel from one
place to another.

This is what the ovary of a flower

becomes.

What are some ways seeds are

dispersed or move?

What is fruit?
The fruit is the ripened ovary
of a plant containing the
seeds.
After fertilization the ovary

fleshy or hard and dry to
protect the developing
seeds.
Many fruits help seeds
spread (maple seeds).
Many things we call
vegetables are really fruits
such as tomatoes,
cucumbers, and beans.

Do plants move?

Yes, plants move! Heres

how.
There a 4 different
types of tropisms or
movement.
1. Phototropism
2. Hydrotropism
3. Gravitropism
