Training Professional Writers Across the Disciplines

ORLANDO, Fla. (Sept. 26,2014)-- Plenty of universities provide students
with the option to earn a degree in Creative Writing, English or Literature,
but few universities prepare students for a professional writing career.
The University of Central Floridas Writing and Rhetoric program allows
students to develop transferrable critical thinking skills. The ability to sell
and influence audiences has become increasingly important...in our
knowledge based economy.
Not only does this unique major provide education in rhetoric, writing, and
literacy studies, but it also provides many opportunities for students to gain
valuable portfolio experience. Many classes offer civic opportunities and
chances for students to participate in service learning activities.
The major consists of 36 credits in addition to the General Education
Program. Each class is specifically designed to incorporate the writing
process, literacy and an understanding of rhetoric.
The Department of Writing and Rhetoric has successfully fostered three
undergraduate programs that pair well with other majors.
The First-Year Writing program was developed by some of UCFs notable
professors and has been adapted by numerous institutions.
The Certificate in Public and Professional Writing and the Writing and
Rhetoric minor program have been successful in the past and are the
foundation of the majors curriculum.
