Lesson Title: Numeracy ( solving division problems )

Lesson Time and Date: 17 Oct,2014
Lesson Aims
At this end of this lesson, students will...
Use picture, number line, and repeated subtraction to solve simple division problems ;

Recognise and represent division as grouping into equal sets and solve simple problems using these
representations
Fill in worksheets
Learning Outcomes (use appropriate curriculum framework)
VEYLDF Outcome
VELS indicators
Outcome 4
Children are confident
and involved learners
( develop a range of
skills such as problem
solving )
Outcome 5 children
are effective
commutators
Outcome 3 children
have strong sense of
well being

Recognise and represent division as grouping into equal sets and solve
simple problems using these representations (ACMNA032)

Use a combination of everyday language and mathematical statements and symbols

to describe manipulation and play with set of numbers .

Investigate number sequences, initially those increasing and decreasing by

twos, threes, fives and ten from any starting point, then moving to other
sequences. (ACMNA026)

Childrens Prior Learning (what do the children already know/what have they covered?)
They already know the concept of sharing,they can solve simple division/ sharing problems within 20
though drawing the picture;
There are four different strategies to solve the division problems;

Teaching Skill Development (What do you want to develop as a teacher?)

1.Demonstration skill.
How to use the appropriate strategy and language to scaffold childrens learning and thinking;
How to interact with them effectively;
Try to fully engage students ;

3.Organization skill
Organize the lesson properly and allocate the time to cover it in its entirety.
4 Observation skill

Lesson Planner

4.Planning skill
Teaching and Learning Preparation (resources etc)
Assess students learning through collecting evidence from students worksheets which is finished in class so
that I can understand how much they have learnt;
Prepare a division game;
I choose two different worksheets from the book Targeting maths for Victoria Year 2
Students in this group are below standard for division
Use of concrete materials eg,counters ,unfix,cubes,buttons
Visual materials are very important .
Session Structure
Lesson Phase
Orientation /Introduction
How best to motivate and
explain the importance of
this lesson? This should be
for about 5 minutes with
links to prior learning or
experiences.

Teaching strategy/Learning
Activities
What will support the
students to learn the
concepts you are trying to
teach and to reach the
learning outcomes? How
will you cater for a diversity
of learning needs?

I motivate the students by storytelling I will say I have 8 lollies and want to
give to 2 person , how can I make an equal share ?
Revise the concept of division which means equal sharing, introducing
different strategies

Playing the game sharing zoo, practice solving problems by sharing

objects equally into two groups :
Eg.22
6 2
8 2
10 2
Demonstrate some solutions using three different approaches;
Eg, 10 2 ? now this time lets try another way ,repeated subtraction,
When you use this way to solve , we need take away same number every
time , so first step
102 8
What is going do next ? 826
624
422
220
Now lets count how many time we take away 2?
Practicing with a small group who could not understand the concept of
division

Conclusion /Closure
How will you capture the
main ideas of the lesson?
Recap/revision etc.

Lesson Planner

At the end of the lesson, we will do a revision of three strategies ;

Eg,10 2 , the first way is number line ,,so firstly you should draw a
number line ,then asking question where should we start jumping
backwards? how many jumps we took ?

Assessment Strategies
Complete worksheets within a certain time;
What assessment strategies
are used throughout this
lesson? These should be
closely aligned to your
lesson aims. How you will
you record student learning
outcomes?

Lesson Planner

Asking them to explain and show the process to get answer

Assess the worksheets against the lesson aims ;
