Though both Athens and Sparta were both Greek city-states, their societies

differed greatly on values. Sparta greatly valued physical strength, while Athens valued
mental prowess. On first glance, the two cultures would appear very different, but there
are some striking similarities.
Firstly, the cultural and social values of the two city-states are very different. In
Sparta, physical strength is what is valued the most. They believe courage and bravery
is what will get you through life. On the other hand, in Athens, mental prowess is what is
most valued. People who succeed are smart and logical thinkers.
The role of women and slaves was also very different in the two cultures. In
Sparta, women had almost as many rights as men. They did similar exercises to the
men, but for different reasons - they wanted to have healthy children for the city-state.
On the other hand, Athens and Sparta were both similar in some ways. They
were both Greek city-states. When larger empires such as Persia attacked, they would
band together as Greeks. They spoke a common language, Greek.
In conclusion, Athens and Sparta were both very different but also similar.
Though they fought at times, they were both Greek - and to the outside world, this is
how theyll be seen.
