Unit Title: Understanding Exponents

Name: Elijah Kim

Content Area: Algebra 1

Grade Level: 9th

CA Content Standard(s)/Common Core Standard(s):

Extend the properties of exponents to rational exponents.

1. Explain how the definition of the meaning of rational exponents follows from extending the properties of integer exponents to those values, allowing for a
notation for radicals in terms of rational exponents.
2. Rewrite expressions involving radicals and rational exponents using the properties of exponents.
Use properties of rational and irrational numbers.
3. Explain why the sum or product of two rational numbers is rational; that the sum of a rational number and an irrational number is irrational; and that the
product of a nonzero rational number and an irrational number is irrational.

Big Ideas:

The goal is to answer questions like, "What is the difference between rational and irrational exponents?"
Students will gain the ability to manipulate complex exponents into simple exponents.
Students will be able to compare and contrast rational exponents and real number exponents.
Students will be exposed to numerous exponential properties to apply when encountering any exponential expression(s).
Unit Goals and Objectives:

Students will understand how to solve, break down, and/or build up exponential expressions.
Students will gain the ability to operate exponential expressions by using exponential properties.
Students will practice with numerous exponential expressions ranging with rational and irrational numbers.
Once students are familiarized with exponential properties, students should be able to foresee where the expression will lead to.
Understanding number sense to solve exponential expressions will be key for future exponential lessons in exponential growth and in exponential decay.

Unit Summary:

Students will be introduced to very simple exponents. They will be given numerous examples to build confidence and build a strong foundation for future
complex exponents. Once they are familiar with exponential properties, they will be able to apply them when solving an exponential expression. They will
be introduced to rational and irrational exponents. Using the rules and foundations they learned in the previous lesson, they will be able to break down
complex or rational exponents to simple exponents. Once they understand the relationship between regular and rational exponents, they will be given a
series of exponential equations to continue to build on that foundation they learned.

Assessment Plan:
Entry-Level:
Brainstorm: How can we extend the properties of
exponents to rational exponents?

Formative:
Worksheet: Worksheet on exponential expressions
and properties
Flashcards: Create flashcard on basic exponential
properties
Cheatsheet: Create a cheatsheet on a 3x5 card that
you think you will need to know for future tests and
future reference
Quiz: Based on basic exponential properties and
expressions

Summative:
Create a class lecture: In groups, create a lecture
based on exponential properties with examples.
You will present this to the class.
BINGO: Create a BINGO card with different
exponential expressions and properties

Lesson 1
Student Learning Objective:
Students will first
understand what
exponents represent.

Lesson 2

Acceptable Evidence:
Exponents is an order to
the operator to multiply a
given number how ever
many times the exponent
requests for.

Instructional Strategies:

Collaboration
Presentation
Organization
Interaction

Lesson Activities:
Practice with simple exponents to build a foundation so that students can
gain confidence when dealing with simple exponents.

Student Learning Objective:

Students will learn special
rules to apply when
encountering rational
exponents.

Acceptable Evidence:
When encountered with a
rational exponent,
distribute the number with
the rational exponent to
simplify the equation into a
simple exponent.

Interaction

Lesson Activities:
Students will be shown a handful of examples to understand and learn what
to do when they encounter with a rational exponent. After, they will be
broken into groups where they will work together to figure out numerous
rational exponents. Once, each group is finished, we will go over together as
a class each equation and build on the foundation we learned before.

Acceptable Evidence:
Using all the rules we
applied in the previous
lesson, they are to break
down each exponent one by
one to a simple equation to
solve.

Instructional Strategies:
Communication
Collection
Collaboration

Organization
Interaction

Lesson Activities:
Students will be given a quick lecture and given a concentrated amount of
examples so that they will continue to build on the foundation they learned
in previous lessons. They will be given a worksheet that has many
exponents that they are to solve that comprise of many exponential
equations they have learned up to this point.

Lesson 3
Student Learning Objective:
Students will now learn
how to manipulate
exponential equations that
deal with exponents and
rational exponents
together.
