ANNOUNCEMENT:
1. AATJ Annual Fall Conference (11/21-23)
The 2014 American Association of Teachers of Japanese (AATJ) Annual Fall Conference will take place
November 21-23 in San Antonio, Texas, in conjunction with the American Council on the Teaching of
Foreign Languages (ACTFL) Annual Convention and World Languages Expo. The venue will be the Henry B.
Gonzales Convention Center in downtown San Antonio. For more information, visit

2. Proposal Submission for the AATJ 2015 Annual Spring Conference (Deadline: 11/1)
Proposals are being accepted for paper and panel presentations at the 2015 AATJ Spring Conference, to be
held in Chicago on March 26, 2015, in conjunction with the annual meeting of the Association for Asian
Studies (AAS). The deadline for submitting proposals is November 1. For details and to submit proposals, go

3. Articulation Coordinator: new position - nomination by 10/31
As the J-GAP program ends in March 2015, we were asked if MAATJ can be the continuing supporting
organization for the project groups. Although we will not be receiving the activity fund from the Japan
Foundation, there are still many ways to meet as a group in this day of technology. MAATJ would like to
appoint a member who can be the contact person who can coordinate the sessions at FLAVA conference. It is
important to sustain the connections that were built over four years. And we believe that it is important to
provide opportunities to report their effort.

Please let us know if you would like to take this position or know anybody who would be great for this
role. We will accept the names throughout this month and hold the online election in the early
November.
4. Election of AATJ Vice President (AATJ members only: 11/3)
If you are a member in good standing, you are invited to cast your vote in the election of a VicePresident/Development Director for the American Association of Teachers of Japanese. The newly elected
Vice President will serve a 2-year term (2015-2016). The Vice-President/Development Director has the
responsibility of fundraising and publicizing organizational activities; he or she also participates with the
other officers in executive decision-making for the Association.
The candidates for the office of Vice President/Development Director are Koji Otani (Thomas Jefferson High
School, Fairfax County, VA) and Masumi Reade (The Woodlands High School, The Woodlands, TX). To see

6. Japan Foundation Grants
A) Performing Arts JAPAN 2015-2016 (Deadline: Oct. 27)
The Japan Foundation is now accepting project proposals for Performing Arts Japan (PAJ) touring and
collaboration grants for the 2015-2016 Japanese fiscal year. The application deadline is October 27,
2014.

B) Institutional Project Support (IPS) Program for Japanese Studies - Call for Applications (Deadline: Nov
3)
This annual program is designed to encourage innovative and sustained growth of Japanese studies in
the US. Each institution should formulate convincing proposals that enhance the teaching of Japan, the
quality of research on Japan, the quality of equipment and materials (including libraries), and provide
opportunities for students and faculty to travel to Japan. For further details, please visit

C) Japanese Studies Fellowship Program - Call for Online Applications (Deadline: Nov. 3)
The Japanese Studies Fellowship program gives scholars, researchers, and doctoral candidates the

8. 2015 National Japan Bowl (Deadline: 12/5)
The 2015 National Japan Bowl registration is now open. The 2015 National Japan Bowl will be held
Thursday-Friday, April 9 and 10, 2015 and the Sakura Matsuri Street Festival will be held on April 11,
2015.The early bird registration deadline for the National Japan Bowl applications is December 5, 2014. If a
team applies before December 5, the $55 for one teacher per school will be waived.
The application deadline for the National Japan Bowl is January 16, 2015.
The 2015 National Japan Bowl Study Guide, Administrative Guide and Application Forms can be
downloaded at www.japanbowl.org. If you have any questions, please contact JASW of Washington DC at

9. Lecture/Workshop by Azama Yo-sensei (10/18)
Villanova University (JF Sakura Network Core Member) and Delaware Vallley of Teachers of Japanese
(DVTJ) co-sponsor Japanese Pedagogy lecture and Workshop. Our guest speaker is Azama Yo sensei who
was named National Language Teacher of the Year in 2012 by the ACTFL. (Lecture and workshop is
conducted in Japanese)
