Title: Morphing Reality and Fantasy
Duration: 50 min 1 Day
II. Lesson Rationale: It is important for students to use their real world knowledge and experience to
reflect on their cultural consumption and cyber-aesthetic experiences so that they are able to
differentiate between reality and cyberspace. Students need to be able to differentiate between reality
and cyberspace so that they are aware of real life situations and can distinguish the severity of the
situation.

After the lesson students will be able to distinguish between reality and cyberspace.

IX. Instruction and Its Sequencing:

Day #1
1. Introduction/Motivation:
As students enter class there will be a split screen showing Sims video game and a home video.
Class discussion on How do these two videos compare and contrast from each other.
Procedure
1. Turn on your computer
2. Open Windows or Mac your preference
3. PowerPoint Presentation on Ch. 7 and 11
4. Research using the Internet to find two (2) still images with one common
theme. The first image is from the real world (non-fiction) and the other
fantasy (fiction).

- Photos (Facebook)

5. Save images to desktop
6. Open Photoshop
7. File > New
8. Name the file your theme (e.g. war)
9. Change width and height based on the orientation of your images. If you
have a vertical and horizontal image then choose one that would work best
for your composition.

Keep resolution at 300

Drag the image you want as your bottom layer to the Photoshop
workspace

Crop, edit, and make any artistic changes you like. Just make sure it
covers the whole work area.

Drag your second image on to the Photoshop workspace

Crop, edit, make any artistic changes you like. This image does not
have to cover the whole work area.

Still on the second image change Normal to Overlay

Play with the Opacity of both the first image and the second image to
create an interesting composition.

Upload saved .jpg file to blackboard
a. File> Save As
b. Format > Select Jpg
c. JPEG Options select OK

Upload your two original images to blackboard as well. Change your

dimensions to all three photos to 300 under appearance.

Write a reflection on what your theme is and why you are comparing
and contrasting the two images? What are the similarity and differences of
the two images? How does the overlay effect the images?
2. Guided Practice
I will show students my example of what I expect and give them a worksheet with guided stepby-step instructions.
3. Independent Practice
Students will work independently to create their projects
4. Closure
Class discussion on how the lines are blurred between what can be found in cyberspace and
found in real life and how we need to know the difference between the two.
5. Formative Evaluation

I will walk around and determine if students are on the right track. If they do not understand the
assignment or a specific step I will individually meet with them.
6. Classroom Management Procedures
Students will work independently and keep talking to a minimum.

would have to research on to connect to their images.
