Practices, procedures and communication in the workplace

The purpose of this assignment is to know how procedures are followed and communicated in the scientific
workplace.
Scenario
You are a senior technician for a large science-based organisation that is opening a new laboratory and needs to
recruit a new senior technician. You have been asked to provide some information that a non-technician can use
when considering different procedures in the work place.

Task 1

Evidence

You are required to perform a number of standard laboratory procedures. Compile a list of all of the
procedures you have covered in the unit along with a bullet pointed explanation of each. You should
also include any examples of work you have completed following these procedures.

This provides evidence for P1

Task 2
Communication of information in a scientific workplace is very important. Assessing candidates
understanding of the importance of effective communication will form a key component of the
recruitment process. Investigate how information is communicated in a scientific workplace by
monitoring and/or interviewing staff from a scientific workplace (practitioners from the institution in
which you study or one that you have visited could be used to gather this information). Produce a
report showing how different types of information are communicated in the organisation you
investigated.
This provides evidence for P2

Task 3
Using the information you compiled from task 2, produce a set of at least 10 questions that could be
used in an interview for a new senior technician. Your questions should be designed to test a
candidates ability to effectively communicate different types of information by different means in a
scientific organisation. Each question should be accompanied by a paragraph or bullet-pointed list
outlining what a good answer to the question should cover.
This provides evidence for M2

Task 4
Candidates for the new job will be asked to deliver a PowerPoint presentation outlining the
importance of following procedures and practices. A number of the interview panel have little
laboratory experience and need some guidance to help them assess the presentations. Write a
report for the panel explaining the importance of following laboratory procedures and practices.
Include examples of practices and procedures you have carried out and the implications of not
following them correctly.
This provides evidence for M1

Task 5
One of the candidates who were not offered the job has written to the company asking for feedback
about their interview and why they were not considered for the position. The interview panel have
informed you that this candidate did not perform well in the questions about communication in the
workplace. You have been asked to write a detailed letter to the candidate explaining why laboratory
practices and procedures need to be communicated clearly. You should include a number of
examples or scenarios in which ineffective communication could cause problems within a sciencebased organisation.
This provides evidence for D1
