Kindergarten Math

SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES TO MEET GOALS


The student will be able to add single digit numbers up to 10 by making flipbooks with addition
problems on each page.
COMMON CORE STANDARDS

CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.K.OA.A.1

Represent addition and subtraction with objects, fingers, mental images, drawings,
sounds (e.g., claps), acting out situations, verbal explanations, expressions, or
equations.

CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.K.OA.A.2

Solve addition and subtraction word problems, and add and subtract within 10,
e.g., by using objects or drawings to represent the problem.

CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.K.OA.A.3

Decompose numbers less than or equal to 10 into pairs in more than one way, e.g.,
by using objects or drawings, and record each decomposition by a drawing or
equation (e.g., 5 = 2 + 3 and 5 = 4 + 1).

CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.K.OA.A.4

For any number from 1 to 9, find the number that makes 10 when added to the
given number, e.g., by using objects or drawings, and record the answer with a
drawing or equation.

Fluently add and subtract within 5.


MOTIVATIONAL TECHNIQUES
The lesson will begin with a fun game going over the basic addition problems adding up to 10.
The teacher will shout out a simple addition problem and ask the kids to raise their hand if they
know the answer. The first child to correctly answer the problem gets to make up an addition
problem for their peers. Whoever gets that problem correct gets to make up the next addition
problem. This game continues until the teacher is ready to explain the flipbooks.

MATERIALS NEEDED
Paper, kids safety scissors, markers, crayons, pens, pencils, a stapler, and staples.
PROCEDURE FOR THE LESSON
1. Students cut 20 squares of paper into approximately 4 by 4 squares.
2. The child will staple together the squares of paper to create a book.
3. On the front cover, the child will write their (Their name)s Addition Book and decorate
it however they wish.
4. On the front of each interior page the child will write a simple addition problem of two
single digit numbers of which the total does not exceed 10.
5. On the backside of each interior page, each child will write the answer to the addition
problem on the front in the top left corner.
6. Also on the back page, the child will draw a visual depiction of the addition problem on
the front (for example, if the addition problem is 2+3 the child could draw a group of two
lollipops and a group of three lollipops on the back of the page).

ASSESSMENT METHODS
After creating their addition flipbooks, the students will take a short quiz on basic addition
problems to assess their knowledge. The flipbooks serve as a study guide for the quiz.
