Teacher Task: Science

Hello, and thank you for agreeing to participate in this project! Below, Ive outlined a task for you to audio record
yourself with. First, please find a quiet place to record. You may use your cell phone or computer to record
whichever is easiest for you. If you are unfamiliar with any recording software, please let me know and I can help.
The recordings should be between 1.5 and 2 minutes long. You may have to practice a few times before you
record to make sure that you have sufficient content. If its helpful, you can outline what you will say; however,
please do not write out your speech word for word. Its necessary to have spontaneous, rather than scripted,
speech. It will be helpful to have a clock or (stop)watch nearby. Also, please leave approximately 3 seconds of
pause time at the beginning and end of your speech.
Below, there is a list of subject-specific vocabulary words based on the Common Core Standards. Please choose
one or two words and explain it/them as if you were explaining it to a class of 11th grade students in your district.
You can talk about the corresponding parts of speech (e.g., counterfeit is a noun, verb, and adjective), give
example sentences, common collocations (i.e., words that often go with that word), discuss its origins and/or
explain the concept. Many of the words can be grouped together, such as potential and kinetic energy. Feel free
to talk about multiple words/concepts and describe them in relation to each other. Consider connecting the word
to a textbook chapter, instructional unit, or current event that would be familiar to these students. Please aim to
make your speech as authentic to the classroom setting as possible. This means speaking to students rather than
your teacher colleagues. In order to begin, it may help you to imagine the following situation:
You are teaching 11 grade Science students. One of your students asks you, "Could you please explain what X
means?"
Once you have completed your recording, please label it with your full name and the word (or one of the words, if
you choose multiple) that you defined (e.g., MEGHANMORAN_CHLOROPLAST). Then, email it to
mkm338@nau.edu. I will check the sound quality of your recording and will be in touch with you shortly.
Please let me know if you have any questions.
Thank you again!
