1. What is the gist of the source?

The source answers various basic questions about dreams. It provides some
insight about the situation and sometimes gives a link for further research.
The source discuses how what dreams are, what certain types of dreams may
mean, factors in your life that can cause dreams.
2. Notes about crediblity
a. what do you know about the authors background
G William Domhoff is a doctorate in psychology with his education coming
from prestigious universities around the nation. He has published books and
has continued to reearch the topic at the University of California Santa Cruz.
Adam Schneider also affiliated with the University of California Santa Cruz,
and involves himself in dream research and writing.
b. what do you know about the publication
The publisher is UCSC which is a credible source as it must be approved by
the university before being published to the general public.
c. how up to date is the source
I believe the source is quite up to date, as the bottom of the home page says
it was last updated 9/19/14
d. what kind of references and sources are used by the author
The authors use the research they have done first hand as well as other
profesional scientists research to base their findings off of.
e. does the source have any potential bias?
There is some bias in promoting their own books, but with dreams each
experiment leads us to new findings so this bias does not imply error.
3. What did you learn?
a. what was new
I learned that we can actually dream while awake when we start to drift off. I
also learned how important REM sleep is to both the body and to dreaming. I
also learned that most people over the age of 10 dream 4 to 6 times a night.
This was interesting to me because often I feel as though it less, until I saw
this and really thought about all the small minuscule dreams I have had.
b. what surprised you
I was surprised that what we have been calling "day dreams" all these years
are actual dreams.
c. what new questions do you have
I still have many questions as to why we dream. And if they are working on or
will work on a device of some sort that can see or track dreams in the human
or other mammals brain. I think it would be very interesting to create such a

device as it would expedite the research into the topic and teach us a much
more.
4. specific quotes that stand out to
a. Exact Quote
"It seems likely that all of us forget 95-99% of our dreams for the very
ordinary reason that we sleep right through them and aren't paying attention
to remembering anything"(Domhoff 1)
your paraphrase
Due to the resting state of our minds, the brain often forgets the majority of
our dreams shortly after waking up.
what is your response or opinion?
I have heard of things like this before, but did not realize it was because the
brain was resting. It makes a lot more sense to me now since the brain is not
trying to remember anything it just goes by. This could also corroborate the
theory that we dream in order to consolidate memories.
b. Exact quot
"dreaming is a cognitive process that draws on memory schemas, episodic
memories, and general knowledge to produce reasonable simulations of the
real world" (Domhoff 1)
your paraphrase
By utilizing various brain functions and knowledge, dreams come to life
emulating real life to the dreamer.
what is your response or opinion
I believe this is also a pretty interesting fact and a very good description of
dreams. It is interesting to see how many scientists know/theorize that
dreaming is a collaboration of the brain activity acting to do something. It is
just not confirmed what that something is.
