Blood Types

Captain Cornball: O
Norma Nanny: A
Sam Stubs: O
Theresa Thyme: A
Glen Glendora: A
Fred Fleckstone: O

Blood type testing

Procedure:
1. Place 5 drops of blood in a petri dish.
2. Add one drop of selected antiserum (anti-A or anti-B) and rock gently.
3. Observe and collect results.
4. Repeat procedure with other antiserum and fresh blood.
5. Repeat the procedure for each suspects blood, the victims blood, and the two samples of blood found at the crime
scene.
We add antibodies to the blood to determine each blood type. Red blood cells contain carbohydrate markers called
antigens on their surface. The plasma (liquid portion) of each persons blood contains antibodies against the antigen not
present in their blood. For example, people with blood type A have antibodies against antigen B, blood type B against
antigen A, type AB has no antibodies against antigens, and blood type O has antibodies against both A and B.

DNA Sequences

Crime Scene 1: GATTCCGAACGG

Crime Scene 2: GATTCCCAACGG
Captain Cornball: GATTCCGAACGG
Norma Nanny: GATTCCCAACGG
Sam Stubs: GATTCCGAACGG
Theresa Thyme: GATTCCCAACGG
Glen Glendora: GATTCCGAACGG
Fred Fleckstone: GATTCCCAACGG

Finding DNA Sequences

To double check the DNA match we ran it through a
computer and the two samples of DNA found at the crime
scene, we compared each sequence to see if there was a
match.
In result, Captain Cornball, Sam Stubs, and Glen Glendora
matched crime scene 1 and Norma Nanny, Theresa Thyme,
and Fred Fleckstone matched crime scene 2.

DNA Fingerprint Color and Pattern

Crime Scene 1: Red, Yellow, Blue

Crime Scene 2: Red, Yellow
Captain Cornball: Red, Yellow, Blue
Norma Nanny: Red, Yellow
Sam Stubs: Red, Yellow, Blue
Theresa Thyme: Red, Blue
Glen Glendora: Yellow
Fred Fleckstone: Blue, Yellow

How we matched DNA Fingerprints

We used gel electrophoresis to separate
each of our suspect's and crime scene
sample's DNA fragments

How we determined chromosome disorders

To determine various chromosome disorders in our
suspects, we analyzed each of their karyotypes (as well
as an unknown Crime Scene 1 and 2).
We identified individuals with Jacob's Syndrome
(XYY), Trisomy-X (XXX), Klinefelter Syndrome
(XXY), and Down Syndrome (3 copies of 21
chromosome)

Chromosome Disorders

Crime Scene 1: Jacobs Syndrome XYY

Crime Scene 2: Trisomy-X XXX
Captain Cornball: Jacobs Syndrome XYY
Norma Nanny: Trisomy-X XXX
Sam Stubs: Jacobs Syndrome XYY
Theresa Thyme: Down Syndrome XX (3 21 chromosomes)
Glen Glendora: None
Fred Fleckstone: Klinefelter Syndrome XXY

Pen Owners
The Crayola Marker used to write the note found
at the crime scene belonged to Norma Nanny and
Sam Stubs.

Chromatography Analysis
There were three possible pens that could have written the letter:
a ballpoint pen, a crayola marker, and a sharpie.
We were already given the information of who owned which
pens:
Ballpoint pen - Glen Glendora and Theresa Thyme
Crayola Marker - Norma Nanny and Sam Stubs
Sharpie - Fred Fleckstone
We dipped strips of ink samples from each pen into isopropyl
alcohol and measured the distance the solvent front travelled
from the bottom of the paper in cm.

Chromatography Analysis
We then calculated the Rf values for each pigment and
compared them to the ink sample taken from the letter at the
crime scene.
Our Results
- Ballpoint pen: 0cm
- Crayola Marker: 2.75cm
- Sharpie: 1.5cm
After observations, the Crayola Marker looked most like the
crime scene ink sample.

Fingerprint
Norma Nannys fingerprint
found on the broken drinking cup
glass near our victim.

How we matched fingerprints

We were given a fingerprint on a glass slide. We applied
fluorescent powder to a feather duster and lightly dusted
the print until it was slightly visible, took an adhesive
plastic card, placed it on the print, and gently peeled it
from the slide. We observed the print under UV light.
We matched the print by comparing it to pictures of our
suspects' prints.

Crime Scene Samples

Crime Scene 1:
Blood sample taken
from the crime scene
We can assume that
this sample is from
the victim

Crime Scene 2:
Blood sample taken
from the crime scene
We can assume this
sample was from the
murderer
