Concepts:

Articulation and balance

Objectives:

The students will:

Perform correctly articulated rhythms in melodic and
accompaniment figures (mm.1-39)
Perform with appropriate balance in regards to the melody
and timekeeping parts (mm. 17-25)
Express contrasting articulation between melody and
timekeeping parts (mm. 17-25)

Materials:

Zombies Knocking On Your Door (John Prescott) Score

Conducting Baton
Metronome (for reference)

Procedures: (1-2 min.)

1. Isolate winds. Check that unison rhythm is in time and

together. (mm. 1-8)

(1-2 min.)

2. Isolate percussion. Lock-in rhythm with accented

articulation at appropriate tempo. Timpani, Crash Cymbals,
and Wood Block have quarter note pulse.
(mm. 1-8)

(1 min.)

3. All play mm. 1-8. Give feedback (remind students to lockin with the quarter note pulse) and repeat if necessary.

(2 min.)

4. Play mm. 9-16. Have Wood Block play quarter notes as an

example of ideal sound. Rehearse mm. 9-16 with that sound
in mind. Repeat section if necessary to point out crescendo
(mm. 11-12).

(2 min.)

5. Rehearse flute, oboe, and clarinet 1/2 at mm. 17-25.

Emphasize contrast between accented section at the beginning
and the staccato quarter notes the rest of the band has been
playing. Continue into mm. 26-27 to confirm contrast of
articulation.

(1 min.)

6. All play mm. 17-29.

(1 min.)

7. Play from beginning through the downbeat of 39.

Evaluate:

Aurally compare articulation before and after

explanation/examples of articulation.

Extension:

If time remains, continue into mm. 39-46. Focus on contrast

between articulation of Fl/Ob/Cl and other winds. Special
attention should be given to Bsn, BCl and Tpt staccato eighth
notes against slurred melody, and the dynamic balance
problems that may cause.
