Great! Mat Ball is a great
game to play indoors in a gym
or even outside. It requires
minimal equipment, which
makes it easy to play almost

Activity: Mat Ball: Class
will be split into two teams
(kickers and fielders). The
field has three gymnastics
mats in each corner of the
playing area, which will
serve as the bases. The
pitcher rolls the ball to the
kicker, who runs to first base.
Players may stay on a base
for as long as they want, but
once they step off, they must
run to the next base. Fielders
can get a runner out by
catching the kick in the air or
by tagging/throwing the ball
at the runner (shoulders
down) before they reach the
next base. A run is scored
when a runner successfully
runs around all of the bases
twice. It is considered an out
if there are no kickers left to
be at bat. Teams switch after
three outs.
Keep score on the
scoreboard.
People who havent been up
to bat will stand to the right,
while people who have been
up to bat will stand to the
left. The order must go, girl,
boy, girl, boy, to ensure

a. Instant activity: Move the Meteor: We will start off the game with two teams.
Each team will be on each green line in the gym. Five cones will be lined up
about 10-15 feet away from the middle of the court on each side of the playing
area. A volleyball trainer ball or med ball sits in the center, which will be called
the meteor. Students must be behind their cone line in order to throw a ball at the
meteor. The object of the game is to throw the gator balls at the meteor and try to
move it past their opponents cone line. Once a team does this, they get a point.
Students can get any ball that gets stuck in the middle of the playing area but they
must be careful because if they touch the meteor its an automatic point for the
other team. Once a student gets a ball from outside of the cone line they must
come back behind it in order to throw. Students may roll the ball, use the
underhand, or use the overhand throw to hit the meteor and move is past their
opponents line. Separate the class into two teams by having students count the
number of letters in their first name. If it is even, they will be one team, and if it
is odd, they will be on the other. If the teams are very unbalanced, have students
cross their arms, those who have their right arm on top will go to the team with
the fewer players. Once the teams are set behind their cone line, signal them to
begin by yelling go! Once a team scores 3 points, stop the game by yelling
freeze, have them collect all equipment from the gym, place it back on the
sideline off of the court, and stand on the orange line for the game, Return of the
Jedi.

at a time. Their goal is to
successfully place the beanbag
(a.k.a. planet or star) on the other
side of the gym and place it on the
other mat. While the Jedis are
traveling around the galaxy, they
must dodge red space balls being
thrown by the Evil Empires
soldiers who are standing on the
Death Star. The soldiers stand on
the mat placed on the floor in the
middle of the playing area where
they try stop the Jedis from
saving the galaxy. If a Jedi is hit
with a space ball they must toss
their beanbag to the Death Star
because now it has become a lost
planet. Jedis are only allowed to
save ONE planet or star at a time!
Mats will be standing upright to
protect Jedis on the way during
their journey. Jedis must go in
one direction at all times and can
only hide behind the mat for less
than 5 seconds. The Evil Empire
has to have at least one foot on
the matt in the center of the gym
to throw a ball. However, they
may leave the mat to retrieve
gator balls for their team located
in the Black Holes (hula-hoops).
The Dark Jedi, those who are now
trying to join the Evil Empire,
will be flying jogging around
the galaxy picking up the balls
and placing them in the Black
Holes so they can assist the Evil
Empire. The students can take
their places wherever theyd like
around the galaxy and once all
players are set, begin the game by
playing the Star Wars theme song.
In 5-7 minute intervals, switch the
Evil Empire soldiers, to be the
new Jedis, and the Jedis to be
the new Dark Jedis. At the end of
each rotation, have the Evil
Empire soldiers count how many
lost stars they stole. When it is

Activity: Speed Ball:

This is the first lesson of speedball
so it is important to explain the
rules in full detail so they play it
correctly for the rest of the unit.
Field Dimensions- We will use the
entire gym space for speedball.
This includes the bleachers and
walls.
Goal Space- The goalie is the only
person allowed in the goal and
crease area. Attackers must shoot
behind the crease, which is behind
the black line and two pillars on
each side of the goals.
Equipment- We are using a larger
sized gator sized ball for speedball.
It is safe yet bouncy enough for the
game of speedball.
Players- the number of players is
determined by class size. The idea
is to have as many students
participating as possible. There
should be some students that are
attackers, midfielders, and
defenders. There is only one goalie
per team.
Rules-Students are allowed to take three
steps with the ball. Once they have
taken these three steps, they can
either pass, shoot, or put the ball
down to dribble.
-There is no restriction on dribbling
the ball with the foot. -If a student
wants to bring the ball back to his
or her hands, he or she CANNNOT
pick up the ball directly from the
ground. - The ball may be
flicked to the hands in a variety of
ways, or lifted in the air with a
pass.
- If a student breaks this rule, it is
the other teams ball.
- When shooting the ball, students
must remain behind the crease, or it
will not be counted as a goal. You
can kick or throw the ball into the
goal for points. Please see
managerial strategies for possible
goal points.

Teacher Evaluation of Unit Plan

Lesson #1
The game of Mat Ball can be a highly active game if taught correctly. Before the students play
the game, I always remind the pitcher to roll the ball to the batter as soon as possible so their team
can get three outs quickly. It is important all students are aware of what is happening during the
game to increase team strategy. I realized when I review and demonstrate the proper technique of

throwing and kicking before the students play Mat Ball, the quality of the game is much better.
Throughout the game, I encourage cooperation and teamwork. If I taught this lesson again, I
would repeat the rule to students that once they take their foot off the mat, they must run to the
next base. Although this is a simple rule, many students forget to do this and as a result, get out.
Overall, the students really enjoyed the game of Mat Ball. Multiple people can be on base at the
same time, and the rules are simple for everyone to follow and be successful.
Lesson #2
Star Wars is a very strategically challenging game. The rules are quite simple, if the other team
hits the Jedi, the game is over. It is amazing to me when students play, some of them never aim
at the Jedi to win! If I were to teach this lesson again, I would really emphasize this point. I
believe I maintained the safety of the students throughout the game. During the activity, I
encourage the students to help their teammates and to work together to achieve the goal. This
game gives students many chances to practice their throwing, catching, and dodging skills.
Throughout the lesson, I could see students improving in all three areas listed above. Towards the
end of the lesson, I took away the hula-hoop (the safe place for the Jedi) and this changed both
teams strategy. It was interesting to see how the teams coped with the new rule.
Lesson #3
The students were extremely active during the game and very excited to play Raider Ball. The
students run a lap and do a plank pretty much every class, which is beneficial to their health. It is
really important to stress strategy to this age group. Yes, the dodge ball part of this game is fun,
but if you are actually trying to win (which they should be) then knocking over the pins and
trying to capture the fish are the most important aspects of the game. I really enjoy the game of
Raider Ball because students can choose their own challenges. The students can try and catch or
defend the fish, they can help their teammates out of jail, they can hit their opponents and send
them to jail, they can defend a pin or try to knock down a pin, and when in jail they can shoot the
ball into the basket to jail break their team.

Lesson #4
In the game of Castle Ball, students can choose their challenge, just like Raider Ball. The game is
very continuous and every round is fast paced and energetic. After a round or two, students
realize that the team who is tactical usually wins, it is not the team with the best players. Before
the students play the game, it is important to have them practice making the castle once so during
play, they have an idea of what to do. Throughout the game, I like to add more balls so I
challenge the students more and more. The students did a great job demonstrating their throwing
technique and this game it is very important to be accurate when trying to hit the castle. Next time
I teach, I may make the distance between each castle a bit bigger to challenge the students even
more.
Lesson #5
I believe the activity, Move the Meteor went well. If students werent playing the
game correctly after I already went over all of the rules, the other team would be
awarded with a point, which I believe really helped all students follow the rules. Also
during this activity, I stopped to see if students had come up with any strategy and
would then ask what part of the meteor should they be aiming for. The students should
say middle or bottom. The students loved the music and it made them feel like they
were in the movie. When I was trying to rotate the Jedis, Dark Jedis, and Evil
Empire soldiers, they were a bit too chatty and did not hear my instructions correctly
and a bit of confusion set in. I had to sit them all down, go over the rotation, and give
brief rule reminders. They were switching their belts, which I originally did not have
in mind. During the Move the Meteor activity, it took me a bit of the time to start each
round because the med ball would roll a bit, after some thought, I set a poly spot on
the ground with a ring on top and then set the med ball on top of this creation. I used
this for the class after and it worked much better. I also thought if I showed the

students the picture of the game, the Return of the Jedi and sat them down, they could
visualize and understand the game much better.
Lesson #6
I believe Speedball is one of the most challenging games in this unit, which is why I taught it last.
It is an extremely fast paced game, which includes skills and tactics from soccer, basketball,
water polo, and ice hockey. Before the students play, I encourage them to talk to their teammates
on offense and on defense. I also explain to the students to create a man up situation on attack,
which will increase the chance of scoring. One of my classes was very big so after I split them
into two teams, half of each team was on offense and the other on defense, which really spreads
the field out. After a few minutes, the students really get the hang of the game and start making
some pretty incredible plays. When they are trying their hardest, they can do some pretty amazing
things. Towards the end of class, I added another ball, which increases the intensity of the game.
The students must constantly be moving to attack or defend. I really think this game is beneficial
not only for the students physical health, but for their mental and social health as well.
