Classroom Management:

In order to create a positive environment that is both physically and

emotionally safe for my students, I will start by making it a home-like climate.
From the beginning, I will implement team building activities and morning
meeting. Students will begin (or immediately, preferably) to value themselves
and each other and the environment that they will call home. Students will
also be taught that if they do not have anything nice to say, not to say it at
all. This will be both a rule and an expectation that will be held firmly.
Students are only supposed to contribute positive information to each other,
inside and outside of the classroom.
Behavioral expectations:
o Be safe
o Be responsible
o Be respectful
Consequences:
o Verbal warning
o Time-out (Take a break)
o Fill out an action plan with me
o Note/phone call to parent
o Parent conference
After being in a school that relies on PBIS, I have learned that positive
reinforcement works better than negative. Students who are not following
the rules or not doing as they are expected, will go through the
consequences that are listed above. However, I hope to use positive
reinforcement more often. I will implement classroom BINGO. Students who
are following the rules, doing what they are supposed to be doing, or setting
a good example for the rest of the class will be allowed to write their name
on the BINGO board. Once a week, I will choose (at random) spots on the
BINGO board, and the students will be allowed to choose a prize out of a
bucket. I will also implement the circles into my classroom. Students can
also earn money (similar to Sunny Money or Lion Lukes) to buy a variety of
items, as well. Students will receive money for being particularly well
behaved. It will be harder to earn the money than it will be to put their name
on BINGO.

Non-instructional Routines and Procedures:

Throughout the day, there are several different times in which there is no
instruction taking place, but students still need routines and procedures. The day will
start by the students coming into the classroom and having approximately five
minutes to get settled in. As the students enter the classroom, they are to move

their marker (with their name on it) to the lunch choice that they want that day. This
will give me the students lunch choices and the attendance all at once. There will be
a cafeteria calendar as they enter the classroom. After making their lunch choice,
students are to unpack their back packs, have their homework from the previous
night out on their desk, sharpen pencils, etc. Students will not be allowed to sharpen
their pencils throughout the day, except during designated times. So, students must
begin the day with three sharpened pencils. After the five minutes of freedom is
finished, I will call the students to the carpet (or other designated are) for a Morning
Meeting.
There will be a labelled set of drawers in the back of the classroom. One of
the drawers will say turn in. Students will place any assignments or notes, etc. in
this drawer. I will check this drawer frequently throughout the day. I will also have
the desks in sets of four. Each of the places will have a number. I will call on a
number for those students to get materials or bring materials to me, as needed.
There will also be jobs assigned. There will be a boys bathroom monitor,
and a girls bathroom monitor. There will also be a messenger. This student will take
things or pick things up from the office or other classrooms, if needed. This student
will also place the lunch count and other papers in the box outside of the door.
There will be three managers. These students may be asked to pass out papers or to
complete other small tasks. Jobs will be changed every Monday morning.
During emergency situations, students will know the expectations. This will
be practiced several times before even an official drill. Students are to line up in
alphabetical order. They will know an approximate area in the line that they are to
stand. They are also to place their hands behind their back (to prevent them from
touching anything). The last student will know to turn the lights off and close the
door behind him/her. Lastly, the students will know the general area where the class
meets for the different drills. If there is any student or group of students that are not
following the procedures, they will be pulled aside and will have to stay by my side
the entire time.
