Chemistry Exhibition 2014

Please use this document to assist in structuring your Exhibition Inquiry Experiment.
Remember, you are compiling your Lab Notebook every day until Exhibition. In addition to your
Lab Notebook and Lab Report, you should have some sort of product from your Inquiry
Experiment.

Inquiry Experiment Design Process

You should begin by creating a document that responds to the following prompts:

Project Design:
Restate your Inquiry Question: Which pill works faster Bupropion or

Adderall?

Restate your Hypothesis: Adderall works faster.

What is the Purpose of your project? Our project simulates the body ingesting
pills, specifically Adderall and Bupropion, and we hope to find which pill
dissolves the quickest. We have chosen Adderall and Bupropion because even
though they are intended to treat different conditions, recently they have been
shown to also treat the other condition.

Please provide an outline of what you would like to investigate with your
project.

What will you do? We will take each pill and put it in a beaker five times
and it will either have Coca Cola, Monster, HCL, Soda Water, or H2O.
Each time we will put the beaker on a hot pate that stirs and we will time

how long it takes to dissolve.

How will you do it? We will do it in a chemistry classroom under a

controlled environment, and we will use beakers, pills, liquids, heat, and
science.

Why do you choose this investigation? My partner and I chose to do this

investigation because we were both interested in pain, the physical kind,
and we started to look at that aspect of pain when we stumbled over brain
pain and how strange it is which got us to where we are.

Please include a day by day schedule of what you will work on each day for the
following time period: I cant include this information until we are aware of our
supply limitations.

What are the step by step Procedures you will take to investigate your Inquiry Question?
1. Grab all your materials. Identify beaker A and B and liquids 1-5.
2. Pour liquid 1 into beaker A. (Up to 125)
3. Place beaker A on hot plate.
4. Set hot plate to high on stirring and medium (4-7) on heat.
5. Gently drop one pill of Adderall or Bupropion into beaker A.
6. Start timer.
7. Let pill dissolve.
8. Stop timer.

9. Record results on data table.

10. Repeat steps 2-9 for every liquid and both pills. Wash beakers before putting in
new liquid and pill.
What Materials do you need?
- Two beakers
- A hot plate
- A timer
- Bupropion
- Adderall
- Coca-Cola
- Monster
- Soda Water
- Water
- HCL
What Safety precautions do you need to take?
- Wear goggles, apron or lab coat, gloves
- Done on a heat resistant surface
- Dispose of liquids properly
How will you make your Observations and record your data?

How will you Analyze your data? Our analysis is based off what/ how the pill dissolved
and the time it took to dissolve.
What do you hope to Conclude? We hope to conclude Adderall dissolves the fastest in
all trials.
What will your final product be? We will probably create a presentation with videos of
what happened, plus we might recreate the experiment during our presentation if we can.
What will you Exhibit on Thursday December 18th? For a matter of fact, we will have a
powerpoint/video to show the night of exhibition.
What Research are you basing your Project off of?

disappointing event and are relatively short lived.

Taking Adderall for Depression (10 Facts)

1. Using a stimulant like Adderall for depression isnt very common.

1. After they are put through the ringer then they need to get put on a psychostimulant.
1. Adderall is one of the most common, and most potent treatment for depression.
1. There was a test with 65 patients and 38 of the patients showed improvement toward the
Adderall and their energy levels and there overall psychomotor activity improved.
1. Psychostimulants work best for depression when Tricyclic antidepressants.
1. Most people who take Adderall see almost instant improvements.

1. Depression is associated with low energy levels, tiredness, and overall mental and
physical fatigue.
1. Adderall helps improve a persons focus.

Taking Medications (10 Facts)

1. ADHD is less common in adults.
1. Stimulants are most often used in addition to non-medication treatments
managed to help with your ADHD symptoms.
1. It can take weeks to get full benefits of some medications like Adderall.
1. Patients should talk to their doctor before taking medication like Adderall.
1. Patients should take their medication 1-2 times a day.
1. Patients should swallow the tablet whole because if they bite they could get
throat problems.
1. All dosages are different based off severity of ADHD and body type.
1. The most common side effect for taking Adderall is upset stomach, insomnia,
and mild anxiety.
1. The rare side effects of Adderall can consist of increased heart rate, severe
anxiety,panic attacks,hallucinations,etc
1. A serious side effect of Adderall would be death.

Wellbutrin Resource (4 Facts)

1. Used to treat depression.
1. Can improve mood, feelings, and overall well being.
1. It will help restore the balance of certain natural chemicals in the brain.
1. Wellbutrin may also be used to treat ADHD.
1. Patients shouldnt take it if they have seizures, all of a sudden stopped drinking alcohol,
and have a eating disorder.
1. It is a depression medication.

1. You should not take Wellbutrin with Zyban.

1. You should not chew pill, swallow it whole.
1. If you miss a dose you shouldnt try and make it up.
1. Taking Wellbutrin may cause you to break out in hives.

Bupropion to treat ADHD (10 Facts)

1. Taking Bupropion may make you want to urinate a lot.
1. It can cause you to have a dry mouth occasionally.

potentiate the production and transmission of neurotransmitters.
1. Adderall is a combination of amphetamine and dextroamphetamine, two variations of the
amine B ring.
1. Adderall alone is not regarded by most medical authorities as a stand alone treatment
option for Major Depression Disorder.

1. Its common for most physicians to diagnose a patient with depression and miss their
underlying ADHD.
1. Most people develop depression as they struggle through ADHD.
1. When primarily treating ADHD, most treatments simultaneously treat it and depression,
but when it comes to their medications people tend to take it one at a time.
1. If you are diagnosed with both depression and ADHD/ADD, then it is suggested to treat
your ADHD/ADD first.
