INTRODUCTION
When analyzing large amounts of data, distinguishing between different data points is important.
Each data set can be given a unique symbol to better represent and distinguish it from other data
sets. ArcGIS accomplishes this by the ability to manipulate the symbols of the data features by
changing color type, shape, and other properties. This allows the data to be more easily
understood.
PRECUDURES
Students will become familiar with data frames through symbolizing features and raster data.
This will be accomplished by going through a packet of directions and answering certain
questions.
QUESTIONS ANSWERED
2. A data frame is a view that shows certain geographic data. It can help to emphasize certain
data points.
3. General Data Frame, Coordinate System, Illumination, Grids, Feature Cache, Annotation
Group, Extent Indicators, Frame, and Size and Position.
LESSONS LEARNED
ArcGIS provides a very easy way of symbolizing different data sets. When we were ask to
change the symbols for the animals, it was much more effective to change the elephant, giraffe,
and zebra symbols then leave them as dots on the map. The majority of data comes in large
quantities and if there is no easy way of displaying it effectively, data analysis can become
difficult.
I found it very interesting when symbolizing the raster data and showing the different elevations
in the Topography data frame. The raster data assigns a different value for data point and then
the data range can be given a color value. Assigning these different color values to the data
points shows the differences in elevation and gives the Topography map depth.
