Enlightenment & Scientific Revolution (Chapter 6)
1. What was the Enlightenment? How did it change society? What was the overall impact of the
movement?
2. How did the Enlightenment impact the Declaration of Independence? What Enlightenment
ideas are found in the Declaration of Independence and American government?
3. What was the Scientific Revolution? How did it change society? What was the overall impact of
the movement?

French Revolution & Napoleon (Chapter 7)


4. What were the causes of the French Revolution? What was French society like before the
revolution occurred? How did this encourage the revolution?
5. What was the social system that existed in France? Who made up each group and how was this
system considered unfair to many?
6. How does the slogan of the French Revolution describe the goals of the movement?
7. Once Napoleon was in power, how did he change society in France? Was it for better or worse?
8. What does Napoleon accomplish and/or fail at on the international stage? Consider the Battle
of Trafalgar, the Continental System, the Peninsular War, and the invasion of Russia?
9. Once Napoleon is defeated, how does the Congress of Vienna impact Europe? Consider both the
goals of the meeting and the effect it will have on 19th century Europe.

Nationalist Movements (Chapter 8)


10. What is nationalism? How does it emerge during this time period? What impact does it have?
How does the movement weaken empires? How does nationalism strengthen/unify countries?
11. What is going on in Italy and Germany during this time? Be able to describe the unification
movements. How are they similar? How are they different?

Industrial Revolution (Chapters 9 & 10)


12. What was the Agricultural Revolution? What changes occur? How does this encourage the
Industrial Revolution?
13. What was the Industrial Revolution? Where does it begin? Why does it begin there? What role
do the factors of production play?
14. How does the Industrial Revolution impact society? Consider social, political, economic, and
cultural impacts.
15. What economic theories emerge because of the Industrial Revolution? What are the different
ideas that embody both of these economic theories? How are these theories different?
16. How does the Industrial Revolution cause global inequality? What is the result?
17. What democratic reforms occurred in Great Britain and elsewhere? What inventions emerged
that impacted society?

Imperialism (Chapter 11 & 12)


18. What was the Berlin Conference? How does it impact imperialism in Africa during the 19th
century? Who was present? Who was not present? What impact does this have?
19. What were the main causes of imperialism? Consider the social, political, and economic
reasons.

20. How did the Africans try to resist European domination? What was the result? Describe where
resistance movements were successful and why.
21. What wars are fought because of Imperialism? What were the reasons for these wars and what
were the results?
22. Why was India such an elusive colony for Great Britain? What was it called? How did the way
in which Great Britain controlled India change? What was the result?
23. How did the Chinese try and prevent European dominance in Asia? What specific events
occurred? Were they successful?

Extended Essay
Directions: Write a well-organized essay that includes an introduction, several paragraphs
addressing the task below, and a conclusion.
Theme: ChangeRevolution
Historical Context: Throughout history, revolutions have developed in response to a variety of
conditions. Whether or not these significant points in history are known as revolutions today, they
have often resulted in significant political, economic, and social change.
Task:

Select two revolutions and for each:


Describe the historical circumstances leading to this revolution
Discuss the political, economic, and/or social effects of this revolution

You may use any revolution from your study of Modern World History. Some suggestions you might
wish to consider include the Enlightenment, Scientific Revolution, nationalist movements, Industrial
Revolution, and Imperialism. You are not limited to these suggestions. Do not use a revolution from
United States history in your answer.
Guidelines:
In your essay, be sure to:
Develop all aspects of the task
Support the theme with relevant facts, examples, and details
Use a logical and clear plan of organization, including an introduction and a
conclusion that are beyond a restatement of the theme

Directions: This question is based on the accompanying documents. The question is designed to
test your ability to work with historical documents. Some of these documents have been edited for
the purposes of this question. As you analyze the documents, take into account the source of each
document and any point of view that may be presented in the document.
Historical Context: Throughout history, ideas have shaped and influenced various societies and
regions. These ideas include heliocentrism, natural rights, and Communism.
Task: Using the information from the documents and your knowledge of world history, answer the
questions that follow each document in Part A. Your answers to the questions will help you write
the Part B essay in which you will be asked to
