Ladies and Gentlemen! Welcome to Brigham Young University, we would like to wish you a Merry
Christmas through our performance of Christmas Around the World: Timeless Stories.
This show is produced by the Department of Dance from the College of Fine Arts. BYUs World Dance
program is the most extensive of its kind in the country, and includes the Mountains Strings Folk Music
Ensemble, faculty and guest choreographers and over two hundred student performers, including
members of The International Folkdance Ensemble.
This year we are especially delighted to have in attendance many folkdance alumni who join us to mark
the 50th anniversary of touring our productions across the United States and around the world.
Welcome alumni!
Our special Guest Performers include BYUs Living Legends, and name of the Samoan childrens group,
and name of the Fire /dancers. For more information about these groups, as well as historical and
cultural notes about the dances you will see, please consult your program.
Take time now to silence your mobile devices, and please remember there is no recording or flash
photography permitted.
Now, as is our custom here at BYU, please join us in a word of prayer.

Long, long ago
Did you hear the one about?
(tellers voice)A story! A story!
(multiple voices chant back) Let it come, let it go.
Now this is all true
Knock, Knock!
Whos there?
In the time before time
Hey! I can tell you want to know why
So long, long ago that we cant say when
This is what the Old Ones told me when I was a child
In a certain kingdom, in a certain land, in a certain village
Youre never going to believe this
Once upon a time

Barta
We, all of us, from the time beyond time
To the here and now
Tell stories.
David
Stories to tell why
Stories to tell how
Barta
Stories of beginnings,
Of now, and of the future.
David
Of heroes and lovers, of fools and the wise,
Quests, comedies, and questions
And patterns made plain
Barta
Truth revealed in our stories binds us together,
And even across chasms,
We recognize one another!
David
We discover the new and the old,
Sort the imagined from the real.
And tell our most precious tales again and again.
Barta
And it came to pass

going to find the child the messengers described. And we did! The baby was there, just as they said.

There is only one constant in life, and that is change. Work and rest, love and
loneliness, hardship and joy, these all ebb and flow through time. How then
to tell these stories to the young ones whose reality is only the bright
present?
David
Posture, gesture, rhythm, music! Dancers can carry the tales, whether about
village fishermen working the river, couples joyously courting ,or darkly
dramatic entertainers romancing the crowd in a caf.
Barta
Young ones will divine pride of their heritage, if only we will tell the tales.

nevertheless , we tend to find ourselves within them.

A magical kiss is at the heart of countless courtship tales. And many a story
concludes with and they danced and danced into the night.

One thing is for sure. Children love stories because a story feels like
play to them. Especially stories of fantasy, and stories of heroes, real

the opportunity for joy right in the here and now. Lets not forget to
