Early detection and intervention team (ED:IT)

We offer a tertiary service to young people who are in distress and considered at
ultra high risk of developing a first episode of psychosis. The aims of the service are
to prevent or delay the onset of psychosis and reduce the duration of untreated
psychosis across Birmingham.

Who uses our service

To access the service the patient needs to be 16 to 35 years old and meet the
following criteria:

Registered (or eligible to be registered) with a GP in Birmingham


Have taken part in a screening assessment with a senior member of ED:IT
Does not meet the criteria for a past or current episode of psychosis
Has symptoms/problems that identify the service user as being at ultra high
risk of psychosis
Is seeking help

How we can help


The service provides the following treatment and care:

Individual evidenced-based psychological therapy tailored to the individual.


Development of goals to improve quality of life, improve coping and minimise
distress
Case management for practical difficulties
Family Interventions
Vocational and educational support
A strong focus on maintaining or re-establishing a service users use of
mainstream services

How to access our services

Young people can be referred to the early detection and intervention team via:

Probation services
consultant psychiatrists
GPs
emergency departments and general hospitals
statutory and non-statutory community drug and alcohol services
healthcare professionals
social services
