Lesson plan: MLA Series

Course: GSW 1120


Critique Week:

Overview:
a. This will be a general introduction to proper MLA format

Objectives:
a. The objective for this to teach students basic MLA format.
b. Getting all students (coming from different writing backgrounds) on the
same page with MLA

Activities:
a. Start by introducing MLA and going over how to properly format the
heading on a paper. This will be done by showing them examples and
having them create their own properly formatted page.
b. Ill then show them Purdue OWL and BGSU Libguides, so they can have
access to resources if the need them.
c. Next I will have all of the students go to:
http://library.hunter.cuny.edu/tutorials/mla/mla_tutorial.html
d. As a class, we will go over the following sections on that site: Quotations
and Citations, Formatting, In-Text Citations, and List of Works Cited
e. Students will have time to explore the website and ask questions. Most
students should have a basic understanding of MLA from GSW 1100/1110

MSE/Library Quiz Week:

Overview:
a. To assess student knowledge of MLA

Objectives:
a. To refresh students knowledge of MLA and test that knowledge

Activities:
a. Students will go to the BGSU Libguides or Purdue OWL webpage.
b. They will take five or six minutes to look around the sites and refresh their
memory.
c. Once they have had this opportunity, they will the libguides MLA library
quiz through reassess.
d. After students complete this, we will discuss the correct answers and I will
answer any questions they may have.

Pre-Search Week:

Overview:
a. Learning more about MLA

Objectives:
a. To gain a more thorough understanding of MLA, especially in regards to
research papers

Activities:
a. Students will go to this website:
http://library.hunter.cuny.edu/tutorials/mla/mla_tutorial.html
b. They will complete punctuation exercise and book citation exercise
c. Then they will do an ebsco host search and find a journal article that may
be relevant to their pre-search essay.
d. In a new computer tab, they will go to this site:
https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/747/07/
e. Then as a class, we will go over how to properly cite a journal article.
They will be creating their own citation with the journal article they found.
This will allow them the opportunity to ask questions, especially if there is
information they have trouble locating in the article.
f. Finally, they will post these to a discussion board, and they will have to
check the work and give feedback to two other students.

Research Week:

Overview:
a. This lesson will be aimed at making sure students understand how to use
MLA in order to properly complete their research assignment

Objectives:
a. to ensure that students know how to adhere to the MLA guidlines

Activities:
a. Start the lesson by taking student questions about MLA
b. Have them go to this site:
http://library.hunter.cuny.edu/tutorials/mla/mla_tutorial.html
c. Once there, the Journal Article Citation Exercise and Works Cited Page
Exercise.
d. When they finish we will discuss the exercise and how to cite journal
articles (again) and how to format the works cited page.
e. Take any questions that students may have.
