Health- The combination of your Physical,
Mental/Emotional, and Social Well Being.
Purpose- To gain knowledge and skills to take charge of
your health for a lifetime

Physical Health- All about how well your body functions
and how the body systems work together.
Mental/Emotional Health- Reflection of how you feel
about yourself, how you meet the demands of your daily
life and how you cope with the problems that occur in
life.
Social Health- The way you get along with others and
how well you communicate with people.

5 Tips for Physical Health

Influences
Heredity- Refers to all the traits that were
biologically passed on to you from your
parents.
We cannot control our Heredity.
Examples: Hair Color, Eye Color, Body
Type, Risks for Heart Disease, Diabetes,
and other illnesses

Influences
Environment- The sum of all your surroundings.
o Physical Environment- Neighborhood, school, air and water
quality, recreational facilities, etc
o Social Environment- People around you; friends and family,
peer pressure, bullies, etc
o Culture- The collective beliefs, customs and behaviors of a
group.
Religion, Language, Food, Traditions, etc...
Your environment is made up of the physical places in which you
live, the people who make up your world, and the culture you live
in.

Influences
Attitude- The way you view things.
Is your glass half full or half empty?
Behavior- The control we have over our actions
Drinking and Driving vs. Calling a Friend
Rock Climbing vs. Riding a Bike

Influences
Media and Technology are the two most powerful
influences on your health.

Lesson 3: Health Risks and Your Behavior

Identifying Health Risks


Health Risk Intro.
Every day we are faced with some degree of
risk.
Risk Behaviors- Actions that can potentially
threaten your health or the health of others.
We need to identify threats to our health so
we can make safe and responsible
decisions.

Recognizing Risk Behaviors


The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has
identified six of the most significant risk behaviors for
people under the age of 24.
1. Tobacco Use
2. Unhealthy dietary behaviors
3. Inadequate physical activity
4. Alcohol and other drug use
5. Sexual Behaviors
6. Behaviors that contribute to injuries and violence

Risks and Consequences


Long Term vs Short Term Risks
o Examples???
o How does a short term risk turn into a long term
risk?
Cumulative Risks- Related risks that can increase in
effect with each added risk.
o Eating a high fat diet and smoking
o Speeding and using a cell phone while driving

How to Avoid or Reduce Risks


Prevention- Taking steps to keep something from
happening or getting worse.
Practicing healthy habits to keep a person well and free
from disease and other ailments.
Examples: Seatbelts, Sunscreen, Getting regular checkups.
Abstinence- A deliberate decision to avoid high-risk
behaviors, including sexual activity, and the use of
tobacco, alcohol, and other drugs

Lifestyle Factors
Lifestyle Factors- The personal habits or behavior
related to how a person lives.
o Get eight hours of sleep each night.
o Start each day with a healthy breakfast.
o Eat a variety of foods each day.
o Be physically active for 30 to 60 minutes most days
of the week.
o Maintain a healthy weight.
o Abstain from smoking or using tobacco products.
o Abstain from the us of alcohol and other drugs.

Importance of Health Education


Today, America spends $ 2.3 Trillion each year
on health care, thats $7,600 per person.
Much of that could be avoided if people made
healthier decisions and took responsibility for
their wellness
Health Education- Includes providing accurate
health information and teaching health skills to
help people make healthy decisions

The Nations Health Goals


Healthy People- is a nationwide health promotion and
disease prevention plan designed to serve as a guide
for improving the health of all people in the United
States.
Healthy People 2010 established two general goals for
the future; increase the quality and length of a healthy
life for all Americans, and remove differences in health
outcomes that result from factors such as gender, race,
education, disability, and location.

Planning has begun for Healthy People 2020.
Goals of Healthy People 2020
o Promote the best possible health in order to end
preventable death, illness, injury, and disability.
o Eliminate health disparities.
o Make wellness a way of life and enhance quality of
life for individuals and communities.
o Promote healthy places and environments.

Becoming Health Literate


To become an informed individual who can make sound
health decisions, must know how to:

Find health information


Decide if the information is correct
Assess the risks and benefits of treatment
Figure out how much medicine to take
Understand test results

Health Literacy
Health Literacy- Refers to a persons
capacity to learn about and understand basic
health information and services to use these
resources to promote ones health and
wellness.

What can you do?


Qualities of a Health-Literate Individual
o A self directed learner
o An effective communicator
o A responsible, productive citizen
o A critical thinker and problem solver
