Daily life in the 1930s


25% of US workers were unemployed
people relied on edible plants and herbs around
them
many people went to bread lines for the hope of food
big family fortunes were destroyed by the great
depression

1930s fashion
-Most women in the 1930s wore skirts at the waste line.
They were the most popular option for bottoms.
-Many types of shoes were worn during the 1930s but the
most popular ones that were worn were the classic pumps,
sling back heels and peep toes.

1930s Sports
-Boxing was such a huge sport in the1930s. They
had to start broadcasting and even started putting
it on the radio.
-In the 1930s basketball was still a new sport at that time.
At least at the pro level. The first pro league went defunct in
1931.

1930s Transportation
-In the 1930s, red caps were worn by people who were
responsible for taking luggage to and from the train at the
terminal.
-By 1930, about half of the United
States owned a car. This helped gas
stations and repair stores to open.

WOMEN STATUS IN THE 1930'S


Roles
Stay at home: chores, cook, clean, take
care of family, etc...
Some had jobs
Pay was very little

Others weren't allowed to get married


Secret jobs and marriage
Had large families, usually more than 2 children
Most were unplanned pregnancies

Rights
Get fired due to lack of job positions for men

Accused of taking opportunity away from men


Some had jobs

Those were treated poorly and paid unfairly


However more women had lady like jobs

(teaching, nursing, saleswomen, secretary)


Black women would had different jobs

In Conclusion
Women had more responsibilities
They were fearless, and would stand up to men
Larger role than men

Medicine and Disease


Disease
the main reasons people died were 1. heart diseases 2. cancer 3.
pneumonia 4. infectious and parasitic disease

another main reason people died was suicide


another way people died was dust pneumonia

polio was the dread disease to children

Medicine

Prontosil was the first drug


there was no medicine for polio
medical care was expensive most families couldn't afford it
hormones and vitamins were used that saved many citizen lives

Inventions and
advancements in science
X-ray equipment was used to identify tuberculosis in an early stage
the game monopoly was invented

the voice recognition machine was invented


the ballpoint pen was invented
