Make 2 columns on your paper and number each side 1-6. Label one side
Elements and the other Principles.
You have 5 minutes to write which category these posters should go into.

Week 1 Theory: What are the Principles

of Design?
First remember the Elements of Art (line, shape, texture, color,
value, space) and that they are the fundamentals you must learn to
use when creating a design or artwork. Similar to learning to read,
the Elements are like the letters of the alphabet.
The way you begin to create words (using the Elements of Art), is
how you get the Principles of Design. So, the Principles are how you
create designs when using the Elements in various ways. The
Principles are: Balance, Rhythm/Movement, Unity/Harmony,
Variety, Pattern, Repetition, Proportion, Emphasis

Your homework is to create 2 pages in your sketchbook

using a design for Balance and Unity/ Harmony

Week 1 Practical: Hand Lettering

Since you will be hand lettering in your sketchbooks, we need to cover some basics
that will aid you in being successful.
To begin, you may want to try replicating some fonts from the computer or
examples in the class. This isnt necessary since you can freestyle draw your
lettering but may be helpful to first get you comfortable.

Tools youll need

paper
pencil
eraser
ruler
small tip ink pen or line marker
markers or other coloring mediums

How to Create Hand Lettering Artwork

on Paper
by: Chris Collins
This first example is for measured letters and spacing. It works well for bold or block
lettering. The same principles can be applied to script lettering as well.

Step 1: Create Some Guiding Lines

The dimensions Im using are as follows:

Letter height: 1 1/4 inches
Letter width: 1 inch
Space between letters: 1/8 inch

Step 2: Sketch Out the Letters- Write the word BALANCE

Step 3: Outline the Letters in Ink

Step 4: Get Creative- Create an Interesting Border for Each Letter

Step 5: Draw Horizontal Lines Inside Each Letter

Step 6: Erase Your Guiding Lines

Step 7: Add Some Shading or Coloring

Finished!

Heres another tutorial to practice script lettering. Complete it using the

word Unity or Harmony for your second sketchbook page.

Week 1 Homework: Your Pages must

include:
1. BALANCE
2. UNITY OR HARMONY

Title of the Principle and definition of the word. Be

creative with your typography to give yourself more
practice with hand lettering.
You may use whatever medium you choose to make your
designs, but experiment with different ones throughout
your pages to show progress of skills learned.
