Exercises
a. Plagiarism Exercises
i. Situation 1 The act would be unethical as the work in question
has already been submitted under the original authors name for
academic purposes. Thus, the work can be technically
considered as published, and submitting such work is outright
plagiarism even with the authors consent.
ii. Situation 2 Regardless of whether or not you were the true
author, a document that was already submitted under a different
name with your (the true authors) consent would be the
intellectual property of the person under whose name it was
published. Thus, any reproduction of such work, without the
author-of-records consent would constitute as plagiarism and
would therefore be unethical unless you contend that the work
was submitted without your permission which would then result
probably in investigations, not to mention fall-out with your
close friend.
b. Image-Altering Exercises
i. Situation 1 Since the image-altering was done in good faith;
and since the images involved were the property of those who
are to do the image-altering, no breach of ethics will happen.
They merely wanted a picture where they are together for
personal keeping as a fond memory of their visit. This
constitutes no malicious intent, nor untruthful motives, and
therefore, is not a breach of ethics.
ii. Situation 2 Image-altering for the sake of impressing ones
friends seems like a petty issue that it shouldnt even be
discussed as part of ethics study. It, however, demonstrates one
of the most fundamental motives and driver for unethical
breaches: untruthfulness for personal gain.
There are three solutions to the situation: impress their friends
with real photographs, use the altered photograph but tell their
friends that it is altered because you think the image is cool,
or stop trying to impress them altogether.
iii. Situation 3 A situation with a very similar characteristics to
situation 2, situation 3 is a very clear breach of ethical standards
especially so since this involves a reputable organization being
misled into accepting clearly undesirable applicants.
To remedy the situation, do not use any altered image and stop
applying to the society knowing that you are not yet qualified.
Take legitimate steps to ensure that you are qualified to join the

society including taking photographs of REAL events and

evidence.
