MATERIALS NEEDED FOR HOMAM

Must have:
1) HOMA KUNDA: Copper container with a
square shaped base
2) RICE POWDER for BASE
3) DRY WOOD & Bunch of sticks
4) DRY COCONUT: Cut into small pieces of 1
inch x 1 inch
5) COW GHEE
6) SQUARE MAT FOR DOING PUJA (woolen)
7) AKSHATAS: Mixture of:
a) Raw White Rice Grains
b) Drop of sesame oil
c) Pinch of turmeric powder
d) Pinch of vermilion (KUMKUM/SINDOOR)
8) WOODEN SPOON: To pour ghee into the fire
9) SMALL LAMP: Consisting of a wick, lit in
sesame oil/ghee
10) INCENSE STICK & MATCH BOX

11) CAMPHOR and a container or plate for


lighting camphor and offering AARTI
12) COPPER/SILVER VESSEL & PLATE & SPOON
with WATER
Optional
1) SMALL IDOL OF LORD TO BE WORSHIPPED
2) HAVAN SAMAGRI
3) 4 BOWLS of: SANDALWOOD POWDER,
TURMERIC POWDER AND KUMKUM
(VERMILION) POWDER
4) FLOWER PETALS
5) SESAME SEEDS
6) PUFFED WHITE RICE
7) NUTS, DATES & RAISINS, HONEY, COCONUT
PIECES, JAGGERY, MILK
8) DARBHAS: Dried blades of sacred grass
9) FRUITS OR COOKED RICE (in microwave):
CREATE 6 small portions/slices

PREPARATION FOR HOMAM


1) HOMA KUNDAM ARRANGEMENT:
a. Place a wood plank/Tile, wrapped with aluminum foil for insulation
b. Put 4 bricks of the same height side by side on it to form base and place the homa
kundam on the bricks
c. CREATING BASE: After SANKALPAM, put the akshathas into the homam kundam and
Put WHITE RICE POWDER IN Homam KUNDAM and level it to draw 6 lines
2) SITTING ARRANGEMENT:
a. Sit facing EAST. Make a seat for yourself in front of the homa kundam.
b. On RIGHT SIDE: Place Akshatas and light a small lamp
c. ON LEFT SIDE: Keep all the water vessels, Kalash, match stick, incense stick, havan
samagri etc.
d. ON LEFT SIDE TOP CORNER of homa kundam: Place an IDOL on a small plate over a
pile of some rice grains
3) PLACING THE MELTED GHEE CONTAINER: On two parallel red lines with kumkum
(vermilion) powder between You and Kund.
How to Draw the Line: From the middle edge of the base of homam kundam to our seat (eastwest)
4) GENERAL CONDITION:
a. Stomach should be empty (or 3-4 hours post any consumption) during a homam for
the best experience. Evacuate the bowels before homam and take bath.
b. To maximize spiritual effect: Keep the body as still as possible, with minimal movement
of only those body parts that must move (e.g. arm and mouth)
5) TO KEEP THE FIRE BURNING: Add New dry coconut pieces (or wood pieces) in between, or
sprinkle some camphor powder. Keep the ahuti small
