Week 1 (due 1/13)
1. Choose a stop & jot; write the prompt and write 4-5 sentences in response
to it.
2. Explain an important decision the main character has made. Then explain
what this decision reveals about him or her.
3. Find sentences in the book that contain an action verb, a linking verb, an
adverb, and an adjective. LABEL those four things.
Week 2 (due 1/20)
1. Choose a stop & jot; write the prompt and write 4-5 sentences in response
to it.
2. Explain some words of wisdom or good advice one character gives to
another so far in the story. Could this wisdom or advice apply in another
setting (time or place), like today? Explain your answer.

3. Find three sentences that use a comma after an introductory element. Copy
the sentences, underline and label the introductory element in each, and circle
the comma in each.
Week 3 (due 1/27)
1. Choose a stop & jot; write the prompt and write 4-5 sentences in response
to it.
2. Find three words that are new to you in your recent reading (not proper
nouns). EBLIize the words in your readers notebook (diagram with rectangle
and 4 outside lines)
3. Select a passage in this weeks reading in which the author is creating
tension. Copy it and explain the tension that is occurring in the plot.
Week 4 (due 2/3)
1. Choose a stop & jot; write the prompt and write 4-5 sentences in response
to it.
2. At this point in the story, explain in detail the main conflict (problem) and
one secondary conflict in the story that the author needs to resolve. How do
you predict the author will resolve those conflicts?
3. Refer to the list of themes in your language handbook. Select one that
applies to this story and write 3 or more sentences explaining the
development of this theme in the story.
Week 5 (due 2/10)
1. Choose a stop & jot; write the prompt and write 4-5 sentences in response
to it.
2. Paraphrase (explain in your own words) two concepts that you learned from
the authors note or historical note at the end of the story.
3. How has the main character in this book changed from the beginning to the
end? Explain both changes in the circumstances of their life AND changes
within the character, for example, evidence of maturing/growing up.
