SIGNIFICANT
LEARNING
EXPERIENCE IN THIS
COURSE RELATED TO
THE CLPNA
COMPETENCY.
PROVIDE AN
EXAMPLE

Through Nursing Foundations 2007, I have learned more about mental

health than I ever did before. It truly opened my eyes to more facts that
I was unaware of, broadened my knowledge of various disorders, and
really helped my personal understanding to be more considerate and
able to consider nursing in this area. I found the information from this
class to be very interesting and widened my empathetic outlook on
stigmas and causes that accompany mental health disorders.

DESCRIBE WHAT

Along with the necessary education on how and why these mental
health illnesses occur, the most meaningful lessons revolved around the
stigmas and perception that come with them. I learned a lot of valuable
information on caring for clients who may have these disorders and to
remain non-judgmental and empathetic.

WILL APPLY THIS
LEARNING IN YOUR
CURRENT AND
FUTURE NURSING
PRACTICE

Right now, I would rate myself as good: understands competency in

theory and in scenarios and nursing practice. I understand these
various mental health illnesses and have seen videos in class depicting
them and have received advice on dealing and treating them. From my
past three clinical experiences so far, I have cared for patients with
dementia, Alzheimers, bipolar disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder,
substance related disorders, schizophrenia, and developmental
disorders. I received a lot of advice from my instructors and buddy
nurses on these shifts, but know I need to expand my own experiences
to further provide competent care to these particular issues on my own
as a graduate nurse. I know this will come with time, experience,
mentoring and furthering my education with research as I enter nursing
following graduation!
From NFDN 2007, I will apply the non-judgment and unbiased nursing
care to my current and future nursing practice. I will be aware of
stigmas in any area I work in, and especially those accompanying
mental health. Im grateful for the knowledge from this course to help
recognize and assist in treatment for mental health illnesses in clients I
will encounter in my career. I learned a lot about mental health from
this course, and will use the knowledge and advice to provide more
holistic nursing in each client and always be aware of the importance of

this.
