Jennifer: Today the students will be able to solve an addition problem
using assigned number values and round the sum to the nearest 10. The activity that we are going to do today is were going to divide the class into groups of five and have them sit at tables by table number. Were going to walk around to each group and allow them to pull a word that has to do with the winter theme out of a hat. Were going distribute the hundreds charts and the skip counting charts, that go from zero to one hundred, as well as hand out a key that matches their letters. Each group is going to have about ten minutes, and you will be timed with an egg timer, to work together and look at your letters and your keys to determine what values are associated with your letters. Youre going to add the values, find the sum, and youre going to come up, as a group, when called to the Activeboard and demonstrate what youve learned and how to show the class the way that you came about getting your answer. After that, were going to break back up and go back to your individual desks and you will be given a worksheet that is similar to the activity you did in your group and I will collect the worksheet when youre finished. When youre finished, you may return to your seat, take out your reading book, and begin to read until the class is dismissed. Kelly: Directions and objective of our lesson will be read out loud for the auditory learners and also written on the board for the visual learners. An example of the lesson will be shown in the beginning of the class by the teacher to help accommodate for the visual learners. Students will also be given a sheet of paper with grid lines on it to help keep numbers in place when adding. Students will be placed in groups to work together on the assignment and have the opportunity to show their work on the board, giving the students a chance to explain out loud, and on the board, what they learned. Taylor: We created an activity where students find out how much a word is worth. Students are placed into small groups and choose a winter-related word out of a hat. These words should about six to eight letters long. Once each group has a word, they will receive a code. The code is as follows: letters A-E are worth one, letters F-J are worth two, letters K-O are worth 3, letters P-T are worth four, and letters U-Z are worth 5. Using this code, groups will assign numbers to each letter in their word. Once each letter is assigned a number, students will add them up to find the sum. Once the sum is found, students will
either round up to the nearest ten or down to the nearest ten.
Each group will have an opportunity to come up to the interactive whiteboard and show the class their word and how they got their rounded number.
