Nowadayspeople, especially young generationwantstotravelabroad.Ontheother
hand, some of them enjoy their own country and do not find it necessary to seek
new places or to study abroad. This research investigated the main effects on
people and reasons to travel abroad. For this study questionnaire were used to
collect data from
tourists and local people. The quantitative measurement was
chosen
as thebest method.Itwas found thatthere were some effects on travelling
abroad for university students, and international travel was effective to young
generationin terms of education. Theirmain reasons as to why they travelwereto
explore something new and to found new places where they can feelcomfortable.
Also, to learn new languages and experience adventure. Meanwhile, it was also
found that many university students agreed that international travel was useful for
their personal growth. All respondents agreed that travelling opens many
possibilities for everyone. As a result, we found the proof that travelling abroad

Introduction
Do you believe thatalloftheuniversitystudentsmusttravelabroadatleastonce
in theirlifetime?Today, tourismis oneof the enormous industries in theworld.
It is reported by United Nations World Tourism Organization(UNWTO)that the
number ofinternationaltourists (overnightvisitors)isincreasingrapidly,from434
million in 1990 to 1,087 million in 2012 and it is predicted to continue to rise
steadily until 2030. They also estimated that twenty percent of all international
tourists are composed of young people from 15 to 29 years old
(International
Tourist Arrivals,p.4)
. Additionally, according to the statistics by O
rganization for
Economic Cooperation and Development(OECD)
, the number of international
students worldwideincreasedfrom1.8millionin2000to3.3millionin2008andit
is expected that the figure will rise between 4.1 million and 6.7 by 2020
(International student migration fact sheet, 2010). The market of tourism for
younggenerationisalsoexpandingdramatically.

Young generation, especiallyuniversity studentstendto like to travelabroad for

recreation or education.Onotherhand,someofthemaresatisfiedwiththeir own
countries, moreover, theymaystatethattherearenonecessitytogoabroaddue
to huge worldwide information from the internetat home. Others, however, are
interested in going overseas to experience various exotic culture, meet local
people andlearn
locallanguagebecauseoftheirpurecuriosityortheambitionof
their futures success. In fact, sincepeoplewho experienced international life or
graduated from higher educational institutions of a foreign country can work in
famous globalcompaniessuchasGoogle,AppleandWaltDisney,theyarelikely
to gain higher salary. In any case, it seems that university students are more
attractedbyforeigncountriesthantheirowncountries.

Thus, the main aim of this research isto survey the effectsof travelling abroad
on university students. We focus on university students because they have
relatively long semester break and are likely to gain the opportunity to study in
foreigninstitutions ofhigher educationcomparedwithothergenerations.Forthis
very reason,anothermostimportant aspectofthisstudyistofurtherunderstand
the pros and consonstudents who arestudying intertiaryeducation. Therefore,
the second objective is to identify the reasonswhy universitystudents prefer to
travelabroadthantraveldomestically.

Literaturereview
Tourists usually pass across different borders to seek positive effects on their
physical, spiritual and mental wellbeing, theywill eventually arrive at various exotic
destinations such as Mexico, IndiaandPeluname. Theyseemto travel for various
reasons, then experience somepositive impacts on themselves or gain someskills
afterunforgettabletrips.

ReasonsofTravellingAbroadamongYouth
There are many reasons why people choose international trip. Some people who
workor study insociety tendto feelstress and want to emergefromtheirusuallife.
Theymayneed torefreshand relaxin beach resortsto resetof their mindorforget
their daily lifestyle. On the other hand, more adventurous people might demand
much more exciting experience. They are impressed by something new andenjoy
strange culture in the destination. Based on an online article from AirTreks.com,
there are seventeen
seventeen reasons why everyone should enhance their lives
with international travel. The factors are forinstance, travellingoverseaswillopen
peoples eyes, allow you to learn about yourself, produce new relationships with
global citizens, and provide special opportunity to learn a new language or
knowledge etc. In addition, people prefer international travel than domestic travel
because of their interests for unknown experience (Yavas,1987). The purpose of
international travelonyoungpeoplearealmostequaltogeneralreasonswhypeople
go abroad in terms of leisure, however, some of them also travel overseas for their
future. For example, this time around younggeneration have powerfulambitionand
desiretolearn newknowledgeandculturecomparedtooldergeneration. According
to David Chamber, Director GeneraloftheWYSETravelConfederation,hesaidthat
the reasons why young people travel abroad were for enhancing themselves with
exotic culture, meeting citizens who have different viewpoints, and improving their
employability skills after they return back to their own countries (2013). To further
support this, the WYSE Travel Confederation surveyed 34,000 young people from
137 countries during August 2012 and January 2013 on their purpose of travel
abroad. Theresult was that 47% ofthemansweredforvacation,22%respondedfor
learning languagewhile 15%forseekingworkexperience(2013).Ontheotherhand,
the counter argument on this issue was also explored on youngpeoplewho avoid
international trip.Foryoung people, especially wholivewith their familyandcannot
work fulltime, it seems to be a serious problem whether they can arrange trip
expenditure or not. However, only if they have powerfulmotivationto go abroad, it
may be possible that theycan solvethisissue by planning theirbudget and saving
their money inadvance ontheir own orwith the helpfromtheirparents.Aresearch
that was carried out in 2012 reported that the youth motivation to travel were
6

influenced by economic factor (Blumenberg,Taylor, Smart,Ralph,Wander &

Brumbaugh).

ImpactsofTravellingAbroadonYouth
Travelling abroad for education tends to contribute positive impacts on todays
globalization. International students can enhance their communication skills,
leadershipskills and problemsolving skillsthrough internationallifeandeducational
experience. Then, the valuable skills will change the world and connect people
worldwide. Hence, most of the governments in the world offer scholarshipsto the
youth who want to study in foreign countries because they believe that studying
abroad is important in terms of the development of their countries andrelationship
with other nations. It was claimed that students who studied abroad were likely to
possess the skills in intercultural communication, solving difficulty compared to
students remain domestically. In addition, they canrespect culturaldifferences and
perceive the attraction of their own countries with confidence (Sumka). The study
explained that the students who studied overseas gained the faculty for greater
intercultural communication skills rather than those who did not experienced
education in foreign countries (Williams,2005).
Benefits from international tripwere
not only caused by studying abroad but also recreation. Travel overseas for
recreation or leisure lead to variouseffects. According tothe articleon IndiaTimes
(2013), there were five effects in international travel for even short vacation. First,
meetingnew people wasone ofthe greatexperiencesof travellingabroad.Tourists
can meet local citizens on train, bus or throughout town. They can improvetheir
communication skills. Second, leaving usual situation by travelling can reduce
stress, whereas only remaining at home cannot refresh. Travelling can temporarily
release people from their daily responsibilities and focus on themselves for a
moment. Third, the accomplishment of travel on basisof todolistled to gainthe
ability to achieve thegoalof usual tasks. Fourth, travel waseffective to acquire the
flexible mind. Tourists sometimes faced
unexpected situations in travels. The
circumstances provided the chance for tourists to overcome the difficulty. Finally,
travelling would teach people about the importance of perseverance because
tourists often encounter some situations which they should wait for something or
someone during the trip, for example, in crowded restaurants, long flight and so
on(2013).

Therearemany advantagesin travelling abroad duetoacquiringvariousskillssuch

as the ability of intercultural communication, solving difficulty and perseverance.
Young generationhasto gain these facultybyholiday travel orstudyabroadbefore
becoming members of global society. Although international travel require
7

expenditure, preciousactual experience in differentcountriescannotbereplacedby

money. The disadvantages of travelling abroad will not be able to defeat its many
advantages. The youth have a number of reasons why they need to break their
shellsbecauseonlyafter

excellentjourneys,theywillmaturemorethanbefore.

Methodology

highest number (34) of students from Kazakhstan, among
respondents. Atthesecondplace,therewas21%intotalofMalaysianstudentswho
responded to the online survey. Chinese and Indonesian students were not so
responsive, 9 and 5 responses, respectively. There are a total of 60% of local
studentsand40%ofinternationalstudents

Instruments
The survey of this research was conducted through a questionnaire, which was
administered online using emails and
popular webbased social networking sites
such as vkontakte.ru and Facebook. In addition, the survey was also carried out
through mobile messaging applications and online survey programme such as
WhatsApp, WeChat and Google Forms.
The questionnaire contains 13 questions
andconsist of2sections.Thefirstsectionwasthedemographicquestionswhilethe
questions for the second part were created specifically to answer the research
questions. Respondents werealso asked about theeffectsandreasonsoftravelling
abroad for university students. Responses were indicated by multiple choice
questions,openendedquestionsanddichotomousquestions.

Procedures
To carry out this survey,13questions wereselected as theparticipants from all the
university in Malaysia. This is because the more specific we are, the better survey
will be. The method called random sampling had been used. This method was
chosen because all the students in the university had an equal chance of being
picked and their chances of being chosen would also be very high. The way of
researchingwas conductedby

Conclusion

In conclusion, it was found that there were some effects on travelling abroad for
university students, and international travel was effective to young generation in
terms of leisure and education. We conducted the questionnaire online through
GoogleFormsto universitystudents.The majority ofrespondentswere between18
and22yearsold.

Looking first at the reasons of international trip. Firstly, 91% of respondents

answered that they prefer travelling abroad to local trip. Secondly, their main
reasons why they travel were to explore something new, learn newlanguagesand
experience adventure.Therefore,itis obvious from thedatathatuniversitystudents
tend to seek something new and experience different culture from themselves
overseas.

Turning to the effects of travelling abroad, it was founded that many university
students agreed international travel was usefulfor theirpersonalgrowth. Basedon
our questionnaire, all respondents agreed that travelling openmany possibilitiesto
personal growth. Moreover, they answered that they can acquire the faculty of
communication and social, planning and organization skills, teamwork and stress
management skills, the ability of decision making. Furthermore, 94.6% of
respondents said that students should go to study abroad. In termsof leisure, itis
also clear thatinternationaltravel make peoplefeelfreedombecauseapproximately
80%ofrespondentsansweredthatpeoplecouldfeelfreeduringtravellingabroad.

For future research, it is suggested to use different types of methodology such as

interviewinordertogainabetterunderstandingofteenagersperspectives,attitudes
andexperiences onthisresearchtopic.In addition,futureresearchcouldbebuilton
more sample as the findings willbe moreaccurate.Additionally, itis recommended
for much specific investigations to be conducted on people from different
generations, for example, children, teenagers, young adults, adults and elderly
people. Comparisons across all generations can be done through comparative
research approach astoprovideabetter insightonthisissue. Althoughthepurpose
of our survey to know about the impacts and reasons of international travel, as a
result,we could find the proofwhichtravellingabroadcausedadvantagesforyoung
generation. We suggest that young people, especially, university students travel
