Finite Element Analysis of a Valve Body

Created for XYZ Engineering Company Inc

CAD Data supplied (IGES file)

Design Scenario 1

The model was fully fixed at the Top Flange (Red area above).
Appropriate symmetry restraints were applied to the symmetry plane (cut plane).
This simulates the effects of a full model but dramatically reduces analysis time.
A pressure of 1MPa was applied to the Inner Bore (Yellow area above)
Material Data
Name :- Generic Steel
Modulus of Elasticity :- 210000MPa
Density :- 7850Kg/m3
Poission's Ratio :- 0.3
Design Criteria
Maximum Design Stress :- 50MPa
Maximum Design Displacement :- 0.1mm

Finite Element Model

Design Scenario1 Stresses

Loadcase1 Displacements

Conclusions
The maximum calculated Stress is 16.9MPa (Von Mises). This compares to a
Design Stress of 50MPa, giving a Design Safety Factor of 2.9.
It should be noted that the Yield stress for the material is >350MPa.
The maximum calculated Displacement is 1.4e-6mm. This compares to a Design
Displacement of 0.1mm.
The conclusion to be drawn from the above is that the design meets the Client's
supplied criteria for acceptability.
