MATILDE HIDALGO DE PROCEL

Hidalgo
Navarro (Loja, Ecuador, 25
de
septiembre de 1889 - Guayaquil, 20 de febrero de 1974) fue
una mdica yfeminista ecuatoriana. Es conocida por ser la
primera mujer ecuatoriana en obtener un doctorado en
Medicina, la primera mujer en votar en una eleccin
democrtica en Amrica del Sur y la primera mujer en ocupar
cargos de eleccin popular en su pas.
Nace en la ciudad de Loja y fue la hermana menor de los seis
hijos del comerciuan Manuel Hidalgo Pauta y la venezolana
Carmen Navarro del Castillo. El nico dato disponible es la
partida bautismal realizada en la Parroquia de San Sebastin
el da 29 de septiembre de 1889 con el nombre de Deifilia Matilde Ins Hidalgo
Navarro y no refiere de cuantos das de nacida acude al bautismo en la Iglesia
Catlica. Se encuentra el Libro de Bautismo, folio 883.
En la Parroquia de San Sebastin de Loja, el da 29 de septiembre del ao de 1889.
Eliseo lvarez, cura propio de la misma, bautic solemnemente a Deifilia Matilde Ins,
hija legtim a de Juan Manuel Hidalgo y Carmen Navarro naturales de Caracas. Siendo
los abuelos paternos Bartolom Hidalgo y Mara Pauta naturales de Loja. Y los
paternos Trinidad Castillo y Francisco Navarro, oriundos de Venezuela. Fueron sus
padrinos el Dr. Aguirre Palacios y la seorita Deifilia Palacios y testigo Pedro Jaramillo.

Despus de que su padre muri, su madre tuvo que trabajar como costurera para
mantenerlos. Matilde estudi la primaria en la escuela de la Inmaculada Concepcin
de las Hermanas Conceptas en la ciudad de Loja. Su educacin secundaria la realiz
en el Colegio Bernardo Valdivieso. La reaccin en la comunidad no fue muy buena: las
madres prohibieron a sus hijas su amistad con ella y el sacerdote local la oblig a
escuchar misa dos pasos fuera de la entrada de la iglesia. No obstante, siempre tuvo
el respaldo de su madre. Finalmente Matilde se gradu con honores el 8 de
octubre de 1913 y continu sus estudios en laUniversidad de Cuenca, obteniendo el
doctorado en medicina el 21 de noviembre de 1921, convirtindose en la primera mujer
ecuatoriana en recibir tal ttulo. Dos aos ms tarde, se cas con el abogado Fernando
Procel, y tuvo dos hijos.
Durante la presidencia de Jos Luis Tamayo, Matilde anunci que iba a votar en las
siguientes elecciones presidenciales. La solicitud fue sometida a consulta ministerial,
decidindose a su favor, y el 10 de mayo de 1924, Matilde Hidalgo se convirti en la
primera mujer en Amrica Latina que ejerci el derecho constitucional a votar en una
eleccin.
En 1941 se convirti en la primera mujer candidata a un cargo de eleccin popular en
el Ecuador y la primera mujer elegida administradora pblica en Loja con el cargo de
Diputada Suplente.
Ejerci la medicina en Guayaquil hasta 1949, cuando obtuvo una beca para realizar
una especializacin en pediatra, neurologa y diettica en Argentina. A su regreso al
Ecuador, se dedic a desarrollar obras sociales, fue nombrada Vicepresidenta de la
Casa de la Cultura Ecuatoriana y fue presidenta de honor y vitalicia de la Cruz

Roja en El Oro. Tambin recibi mltiples reconocimientos como la condecoracin con

el Mrito de Salud Pblica. Fue la primera doctora en medicina del Ecuador

My trip to the Galapagos Island

I just came back from my amazing 6-day trip to the

Galapgos. I bought a cruise with the ship Santa.
When I arrived at the Galapagos Islands I was picked
up from the airport by bus and my luggage was
brought to our cabins. We took a small boat to our
ship and started our day with a welcome cocktail. As
far as I can remember we had lunch directly after
that. The food during the whole trip was great (thanks
to the cooks). For breakfast and lunch we had a
buffet and for dinner a four course menu.
Later at the first day we went for our first visit to the islands. We saw many, many
iguanas, sea lions, birds, etc. it was great! (We had to take care not to step on them.)
Of course, we saw giant tortoises at the Darwin station as well and smaller tortoises on
some of the other islands. But that was mainly it. Still, we had a great time, seeing
awesome beaches and landscapes. No matter how great the visits of the different
islands were (we visited Isabela, Fernandina, Santa Cruz and Floreana), the snorkeling
activities topped everything by far. We snorkeled nearly every day one or two times for
about one hour.
The second day we snorkeled between bunches of turtles. We even could have
touched them easily, but we weren`t allowed to. The other days we were swimming with
different kinds of fish, sea lions and penguins. All of that combined (but no turtles) we
saw on our last snorkeling trip. It was one of the best experiences of my whole life.
There were soooo many fish around us of soo many colors of all sizes. It was stunning.
Also huge sea lions and even some sharks.
You could get really close to fish and sea lions, and they just weren`t scared. The only
guy who was scared was I, when a huge sea lions faced me and I thought he would
just swim though me. (Luckily he did not.) The sea lions are so fast under water
compared with that the fish seemed not to move at all. (I know I am repeating myself. It
was AMAZZING!)
Back from the Islands to our ship: On the ship were people of all ages, but mostly older
people and many couples. I personally went there and was scared not to meet anyone
at my age and to be alone for six days. However, even I made good friends. Some of
the older people thought they couldn`t do the snorkeling so they missed the absolutely
best part. (So if you are of older age (no matter what age) please just do yourself that
favor and try it. It is like swimming just more fun and nobody died or hurt himself.)
Another highlight on the ship was the Jacuzzi. Between the different activities I enjoyed
to relax there and to glimpse at the sea or to look at the stars during the night (you
could see them great).
To the weather: It was really warm (ca. 25-30 C. sorry I am bad with Fahrenheit. Just
look it up.), sometimes even too warm during the walks on the islands. This was
another reason why the snorkeling activities were a nice change. They were a nice
cooling-off.

To sum up, I would recommend everybody to make

the same experiences on Galapagos Islands.
