information. In order to keep track of important ideas and to check understanding, you summarize the author's key points by briefly restating the main idea in your own words. Notice details, examples, facts, and explanations the author includes. Then look for a connection among the details. Once you have determined the main idea, organize it logically and in your own words without adding opinions.

Vocabulary Strategy: Greek Roots
Many scientific words are formed
using Greek roots. Say that a root is the part of a word that carries its basic meaning. A root can combine with a prefix, suffix, or another root to form a word.
