    automated8enginefacility.Thechallengewastomaintainsafetyintheoldbuildingshazardousnaturalgasenvironment(CLASS1Division1andDivision
    2GroupD)whileavoidingunnecessaryEmergencyShutdown(ESD).
    NewFrontierTechnologies(NFT)isdesigningacosteffective,limitedautomationsolutionwhichwilldirectlyaddresstheproblem.Theadditionofautomatic
    engineloadvalvecontrolwillletanoperator(orthesystemactingautomatically)shutdown/blowdownanindividualenginewhenaleakisdetected,isolating
    theproblembeforeanESDistriggered.GasControlwillbeabletoinitiateunitshutdownifnecessary.
    Thenewsystemwillalsosupportsemiautomatedenginestartupfroma
    localPLCpaneltoquicklybringanenginebackonlinewhentheproblemis
    cleared.Theoperatorwillstillmanuallysetenginespeedandloading.
    ThecustomerismodifyingthesafetysystemtosupportLimitedLocalArea
    Shutdown(LASD)oftheoldbuilding.Ifthebuildingpercentlowerexplosive
    limit(%LEL)setpointisexceeded,theLASDistriggered.Thestationstays
    onlineandcontinuestooperatewiththemainengines.OnlyiftheHigh
    %LELconditionpersistsforapredeterminedtimeisafullESDperformed.
    TheNFTteamisbasingtheautomationarchitectureonaCTIPLCanda
    ParkerCTCHMI,acombinationfamiliartothecompanyspersonnel.
    Tomeetspaceconstraintsandlowerprojectcosttheydesignedthesystem
    tocontrolallthreeenginesfromthesinglePLC.
