Robert Altman was a notorious rule hater from the American mid
west. He directed episodes of TV shows for a decade before getting
into features. Working for TV networks and having zero creative
freedom led Altman to make films sideways. He favored behavior
and locale over plot or structure.

Contrast and Comparison. Robert Altman and Paul Thomas
Anderson. Just watched a great doc on the former titled simply
Altman. The minute I saw footage of Shortcuts finale I realized I
had to do a C&C on these two masters. PTA is indebted to Altman
in so many ways. I recommend checking all these flicks in pairs to
check the earmarks PTAs drawing from. PTA is following
Altmans film oeuvre like a roadmap of what to try next. Pretty
excited to see what hell draw from next. Already theyve both
spent time deconstructing Western and Noir tropes, dabbling at
and failing to break into the mainstream crowd pleasing and lastly
fine tuning the art of ensemble filmmaking. They dont get much
better than these two.

satirical black comedy M*A*S*H, Robert Altman easily secured a

directing job on the adaptation of Edmund Naughtons 1959 novel
McCabe, and delighted with the directors work on the
aforementioned film, Warren Beatty readily accepted the lead role.
It would be disrespectful to simply say Altman didnt disappoint
indeed, what he created back in those cold and wet Vancouver
days of late 1970 falls nothing short of one of the most beautiful
and emotionally stirring westerns American cinema ever
produced. Altmans filmmaking handwriting is visible in every
detail, as he fills the screen with complex, deep characters who
give you that magical feeling in your stomach, the feeling that
youre not watching a film but are simply given a privileged
position of peeping through the window into the lives of real
people, of genuine personalities with hopes, dreams, fears and
insecurities, the overwhelmingly satisfying feeling of using a portal
and entering some forgotten time, when it was perfectly
unsurprising to witness a cold-blooded shooting over business
disagreements. With Vilmos Zsigmonds enchanting
cinematography, with Leonard Cohens unforgettable,
atmospheric tunes of Sisters of Mercy or Winter Lady, with Beatty
and Julie Christie tuning in performances that render you
speechless, with a story penned by Brian McKay and Altman
himself that breaks your hope-craving hearts into little pieces,
McCabe & Mrs. Miller is a piece of anti-western poetry thats
impossible to shake off, a film so great in its execution, strength
and significance it is literally impossible to convey what it means
to us in plain words. Magnificent work by a true artist that
provides abundant nourishment for film-loving souls.

(ep.2) All the Presidents Women (dir. Robert Altman)Bill
Johnson is on the verge of realizing a dreamthe Presidency of his
Texas country club. In addition to his wife, Bill juggles a variety of
mistressesm, each one unaware of the others. All seems well, until
his current mistress receives an unidentified package in the mail
containing an unloaded gun. Bill becomes unnerved when he
discovers that his wife and another mistress received similar
mysterious packages, each containing the clip and bullets. Bill
must piece together the mystery of the gun before approaching
inauguration party. Who is sending these packages and why? The
stories converge on the night of the party as the women enact a
clever revenge plan on the man who would be president.

This 2005 Revlon commercial was meant to be shown in movie

theaters. Director Robert Altmans original cut was rejected. This
is not his original cut; its a version meant to appease the client. In
Robert Altmans cut Halle seamlessly drops her gown and puts her
blouse on without that awkward edit. Revlon ultimately felt there
were no close-ups of products therefore it was not useful for them
(they had approved the storyboards and were at the shoot, but
were surprised when they saw the edit). So it never aired. This
basically is a run-through by the actors. Many other takes were
meant to follow as the actors got more comfortable and creative
ad-libbing. Unfortunately it was cut short and ended early at this
version because Jullianne Moore could not move her schedule.
Afternoon and evening takes were instead spent doing Julliane
Moores 30 second spots meant for TV broadcast, since she would
not come back another day to film those. Those 30 second spots
did air but without dialog. FYI - The music is not original to this
project and was added much later by someone not affiliated with
