Spatial Interaction (Movement & Migration)

1. Review the Notes under the Migration and answer the corresponding questions
these do not need to be put on your website, but you do need to know these for the
test:

a. Migration Trends Powerpoint

1. What is the difference between mobility and migration?
Mobility: change in residence (16%of US population moves annually.)
Migration: permanent or semi-permanent change in residence crossing an
administrative boundary. (More restrictive than mobility and involves a
new activity system with a new job, friends, places etc.)
2. How does the types of movers demonstrate that mobility is greater
than migration?
Because most movers end up moving shorter distances than originally
planned and many stay in the same county and community.
3. Give an example that shows why US mobility and migration rates
are high.
Americans move about 11 times in their lives and are free to do so. It is
statistically shown once someone moves once they are more likely to
move again. Land is also easy to develop and housing markets are open to
all. Although still among the highest in the world mobility has declined
since 1950.
4. Why have mobility rates in the US declined between the 1940s and
2000?
More dual career households, higher level of ownership In homes,
improved mobility encourages commutes over moving.
- with cities getting more congested and commutes taking longer
this may reverse.
5. List and explain 2 possible reasons for the large variations in % born
that reside in states.
Because of the types and number of jobs that are available within states.
And the education rates.
6. Why are highly educated people most likely to make long distance
moves?
Because they are following a well-paying job or opportunity. They also feel
more stable in making a new life.

Increasing ethnic and political strife middle east and other failing govts.
2. Find a news article that discusses an issue related to guest workers
in a European
Country and a Middle Eastern country. Describe the issues in each
country.
3. From the foreign born as % of European Populations slide, which
countries will need to open up immigration to avoid economic
stagnation? Why?
All the countries under 5% should open their boarders along with
countries that have not joined EU. It will create competition and increased
business interaction.
4. Why is the African continent home to such a large number of
refugees?
Because boundaries drawn by Europeans do not always reflect ethnic or
tribal borders.
5. What is the final destination for most refugees?
Most refugees are returned to place of birth. A small proportion are
permanently resettled.

c. Migration Streams and Counter streams PowerPoint

1. Discuss one example of a migration stream and counter stream in
the United States.
Migration Streams = highly channelized flow from a particular origin to
destination
Counter streams = return movement
An example of this is the blacks moving north after WW1 due to
discrimination and income inequalities. It gave them opportunities for
better jobs and better lives. After 1970 the trend reversed after race riots
began in some urbanized cities and as the south continued to evolve.
Whites also moved south at this time.
2. Visit the following website, http://www.ungift.org/knowledgehub/media/films.html
Choose a movie to watch that deals with a form of forced migration human
trafficking. Do not watch anything rated R while at school, use your best judgment
when selecting a film (some are very graphic) and I would prefer you watch a
documentary vs. a Hollywood production. Some films require you to purchase the
movie so you could watch it with a group and split the cost or look for it on Netflix or
Amazon Prime.
Or
Use the link to a Discovery HD Documentary entitled 21 st Century Sex Slaves
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_iNBKlBcXkY
You will not be able to watch it on school computers, but could watch it on your own
computers or at home.
3. Provide an original overview of the problem of Human Trafficking and state how
well the movie/documentary addresses the problem. Do some research on the

largest source and destination areas and describe the ways in which globalization
has contributed to the proliferation of human trafficking. Put this on your website
before Tuesday 3/3.
The largest destination for human trafficking is Bangkok. Throughout the
whole world there are about 1.5 million sex slaves and over half of them
live in Asia. Throughout the world one woman or child is forced into sex
every minute. They are tricked into joining by the need to help support
their family and then are blackmailed into staying. They feel if they leave
they will put those close to them in danger and also are afraid they wont
be able to support themselves. These women are than forced to become
spokes people and encourage other woman to join. This is how the chain
continues its downward spiral because woman are more likely to trust the
advice of other woman in the situation. When they refer to sex trafficking
they say company or another discreet word so as not to get in trouble.
This movie covers human trafficking in great detail and paints a good
picture in your mind of the problem and why it must be stopped.
