1. To enhance students mastery of skill related to sets

2. To enable students to apply knowledge of sets
in solving daily problem.
3. To enhance relevant knowledge and skills through various resources such
as book and internet.

On 22nd July,Mr Lau had given us a coursework about SETS.According to

the question,we have to conduct a survey about the topic that we
choose.Thus,we need to find respondent in order to conduct the survey.
After having a discussion, we had agreed to choose sport as the topic of our
coursework.The students in this IPG had been being our respondents. We had
made the survey of the sports that they like or dislike on 25 th till 27th of July.
The distribution of the data that we got from the survey that we made, can be
seen at the soon pages in this folio (coursework).

Conduct a survey on a topic of your choice (e.g .fruit ) with 3 examples ( e.g.
grape, kiwi, strawberry ) on two options 9 e.g. whether they like/dislike the fruit ).
The sample should consists of more than 20 but fewer than 40 respondents.
Collects the required information using a simple questionnaire form. Represents
the information using a Venn diagram , using the symbols A, B, C to represents
the set of examples and E to represents the universal set .Answer the following
questions based on your Venn diagram.
Find :
(i) (a) n (E)
(b) n(A U B U C) (c) n(A n B n C) (d) n(A n Bn C)
(e) n((A U C) B)
(ii) Shade the region represented by (A n B) U (A n B).
(iii) By using algebraic law of sets, prove that
(A n B) U (A n B) = (A U B) n (A u B)

E = SPORTS
A = FOOTBALL
B = PING PONG
C = RUGBY

Find:
(i)

(a) n(E ) = 40+4+9+4+6+4+2

= 69
(b) n (A U B U C) = 4+9+4+6+4+2
= 29
(c) n (A n B n C) = 4

(d) n(A n B n C) = 4

(e) n((A U C) B) = n((A U C) n B)

= 9+4
= 13

(ii)

Shade the region represented by (A n B) U (A n B).

(iii) By using algebraic law of sets , prove that

(A n B) U (A n B) = (A U B) n (A U B)

SOLUTION:
(A n B) U (A n B) = (A U B) n (A U B)
Left hand side = (A n B) U (A n B)
= [ (A U A) n (A U B)] n [ (B U A) n (B U B) ]
= [ E n (A U B) ] n [ (B U A) n E ]
= ( A U B) n ( A U B ) .proven
