1. Number Sense,
Properties, and Operations
Have each of the students
create a word problem that
uses addition or subtraction.
Have each student use
create a presentation to
demonstrate this problem
using tools such as
PowerPoint. Each
presentation should include
words, numbers, images
and voice. Have each
student record themselves
talking about what is
happening in the problem,
how they went about solving
it, and what the answer is.
This can then be shared
with other students in the
class so they can get
different examples on how
to solve math problems.
Also have the students
suggest different ways of
looking at the problem (i.e. if
they present an addition
problem, how can it be
rephrased to function as a
subtracting problem?).
Place the resulting problems
on a class website for
students to refer back to
later.

Mathematics
1. Creativity and innovation.
a. apply existing knowledge to generate new ideas,
products, or processes
b. create original works as means of personal or
group expression.
c. use models and simulations to explore complex
systems and issues
d. identify trends and forecast possibilities
2. Communication and collaboration
a. interact, collaborate, and publish with peers,
experts, or others employing a variety of digital
environments and media
b. communicate information and ideas effectively to
multiple audiences using a variety of media and
formats.
d. contribute to project teams to produce original
works or solve problems
4. Critical thinking, problem solving, and decision
making
a. identify and define authentic problems and
significant questions for investigation
b. plan and manage activities to develop a solution or
complete a project
c. collect and analyze data to identify solutions and/or
make informed decisions
d. use multiple processes and diverse perspectives to
explore alternative solutions.
6. Technology operations and concepts
a. understand and use technology systems
c. troubleshoot systems and applications
d. transfer current knowledge to learning of new
technologies

group choose a book to
read (each group will read
something different). Have
each group read the book
and answer a set of
questions. Then have each
group create a presentation
using a presentation tool,
such as PowerPoint, to
explain the answers to the
questions. This activity can
be done in rounds if wanted.
For instance one week, one
group reads a book and
then the next week they
trade with another group.
Have the students take note
on the presentation so that
later, they can compare
information and
understand/analyze the
thought process of other
groups.

1. History
2. Geography
Have each student work
with parents and caregivers
to create a map of a
neighborhood (this
neighborhood could be the
school, work, relatives
friends, personal, etc
neighborhoods). Within that
map have the students
identify features both human

and natural (houses, rivers,
lakes, parks, etc.). When
the maps are completed,
have the child create a
presentation using
presentation tools such as
PowerPoint/Prezi/Voicethre
ad to present their maps.
Within this presentation
have the student give
directions throughout the
map. For instance, if there is
a house you can turn right
and then nearby there will
be a park. Describe this
project in stages and
provide an example as to
what you are looking for as
part of each stage of the
project. (DOK 1-2)

Have students choose 4-5
species exemplifying
parents and their offspring.
Have each student join a
small group and have them
create a presentation using
presentation tools such a
PowerPoint to explain their
results. For the first part of
the project, have each
student compare the parent
and the offspring based on
physical characteristics. The
second part, have the
students compare and
contrast the characteristics
of the parents and offspring
with another species that

presentations posted on the
class website or individuals
websites and have the
students respond to the
presentation. Have each
student reflect on the
presentation as well as
contributing more to the
comparisons and contrasts.

Have students create a
story about some of the
familiar objects in their life in
a simulation of different
pictures. Have the students
place the pictures in a
presentation tool such as a
PowerPoint. Insert actual
images (from home or
classroom) to add the extra
meaning of the image to
their daily life. Encourage
the student to initiate a
conversation about that
story.

Reflection:
These are all very different examples of lessons that could be used within a first grade classroom. I just want to clarify that all these lessons would be placed on the classrooms website to allow for
collaboration and feedback. This would be in addition to some of the actual presentations that I would be set to occur. Some of these presentations would be more extensive than others but it allows
students an organized way to explain their thoughts and end results. Most of these examples were group based so integrating presentations and types of presentation tools to allow for collaboration and
more interaction between students.
