    Genocidesseemlikeathingofthepasthowever,itisquitetheopposite.Genocidesare
    thedeliberatekillingofalargegroupofpeople,especiallythoseofaparticularethnicgroupor
    nation(Genocide).Onaverage,genocidevictimsareusuallypeopleofminorityraceor
    religion.SomerecentgenocidesoccurredinRwanda,1994,andDarfur,2003to2010("Past
    GenocidesArmenia,Holocaust,Cambodia,Bosnia,Rwanda,Darfur").Manypeoplebelieve
    thattheHolocaustwastheonlylargegenocidehowever,therehavebeenmanymoreinjustthe
    lastthreedecadesandtheyallhavethreemajorstagesincommon.
    Everygenocidebeginswiththeclassificationanddiscriminationofacertaingroupof
    people.First,genocidespicktheirtargetthroughgeneralhatredorpropaganda.Forexample,in
    Rwanda,theHutu,agenerallypoorergroupinRwandathatmadeupeightyfivepercentofthe
    population,alwayshadhatredfortheTutsi,thegenerallyrichergroup("UnitedHumanRights
    Council").Similarly,AdolfHitlerusedpropagandatoshowhispointthatJewswerebadleading
    uptotheHolocaust.Oncethetargethasbeenpickedforthegenocide,thediscriminationthen
    takesplace.DuringtheHolocaust,theNazipartyproceededtopasslawstodiscriminateagainst
    JewslikemakingitillegalforJewstoownjewelery,gold,oranyvaluables(Wiesel10).In
    Rwanda,theHututookcompletecontrolofthegovernmentbymakingitillegalforTutsisto

    participateinthegovernment.Oncethesestepsarecomplete,thegenocidesproceedtothe
    preparationphase.
    Oncegenocideshavepickedtheirtargets,theythenmustpreparephysicallyandmentally
    forthegenocidethatisgoingtofollow.Genocidesattempttodehumanizetheirtargetsinorder
    togainsupportfromasmanypeopleaspossibletokeepthethreatofrebelliondown.Beforethe
    Holocaust,NazipropagandabegantosurfacedepictingJewsasrats.Oncethisiscompleted,then
    genocidescanbegintoorganize.InDarfur,theSudanesegovernmentbegancompilingthe
    Janjaweed,ortheArabmilitia("UnitedHumanRightsCouncil").IntheHolocaust,theNazi
    partybegantoconstructconcentrationcampssuchasAuschwitz.Afterallofthis,thengenocides
    cangettotheexterminationphase.
    Finally,onceallotherstagesarecomplete,thentherealhorroroccurs.Persecutionand
    exterminationbegin.MillionsofJewshavediedintheHolocaustinconcentrationcampsaround
    Europe.Similarly,Darfurhasexperiencedfourhundredthousanddeathsandovertwomillion
    displacedvictims("UnitedHumanRightsCouncil").Whenthekillingfinallystops,thencomes
    thestageofdenialwhereevidenceofthegenocideisattemptedtobedestroyed.InbothRwanda
    andduringtheHolocaust,theattackersdugmassgravestohidethebodiesofthevictimsinorder
    tobringlesspunishment.Intheend,allofthisisoccursbecauseofhumanhatred.
    Genocideshaveoccurredinthepastandwillkeeprepeatingthemselves.Allgenocides
    haveeerilysimilarcharacteristicsmeaningthattheycanbepreventedbeforepeopleare
    meaninglesslyslaughtered.Whenpeoplelearntospotthebeginningsofagenocide,manylives
    couldbesparedandpeacecanbekeptwithoutlargemilitaryintervention.Now,withallthis
    information,aregenocidesreallyathingofthepast?
