Intro to Nursing Theories &


Concepts I: Fall 2012

Emphasis is placed on concepts and theories underlying

Health Assessment Lecture


& Assessment Lab: Fall 2012

This clinical laboratory course emphasizes the assessment


phase of the nursing process. Skill acquisition in health
assessment and health history interviewing is facilitated by
supervised practice, faculty demonstration, and self-paced
learning in the audio-visual laboratory.

Therapeutic Diets I: Fall 2012 This course focuses on concepts of normal nutrition. Emphasis
is placed on understanding the impact of various nutrients on
the body.

Clinical: Spring 2013

This clinical course emphasizes the supervised application of


health assessment skills, nursing process, and clinical nursing
techniques in clinical laboratory and acute care settings.
(qualifies as a CAP experience)
For this clinical I was at Bon Secours Mary Immaculate Hospital
on the inpatient telemetry floor. I cared for patients needs
under direct clinical supervision of a clinical instructor or nurse.
I was able to learn how to read telemetry strips, give patients
baths, do patient teaching, monitor patients, take patient vital
signs, do patient care plans, and more. I also got to spend one
week in the outpatient infusion center where I helped flush
IVs, assessed central lines, assisted with blood product

administration and more. We were in the clinical setting 6


hours once a week for 6 weeks for an estimated total of 36
clinical hours. This does not include time taken for preclinical
paperwork.
Nursing Process & Drug
Therapy I: Spring 2013

This course addresses the general principles of drug therapy


and beginning application of the nursing process as related to
drug therapy for clinical situations involving individuals at all
phases of the life cycle and at different levels of wellness.

Nursing the Gerontological


Client: Spring 2013

This course focuses on the nursing needs of the


Gerontological client. Emphasis is on the multi/complex needs
of the older adult.

Adult Health Nursing I


Lecture & Clinical: Fall 2013

Lecture: This lecture course focuses on the adult client


experiencing alteration and/or adaptations in bodily defense
mechanisms. Emphasis is on the use of the nursing process to
assist adult clients to adapt to the body's breakdown of
defense mechanisms.
Clinical: This clinical course focuses on the nursing process
with adult clients experiencing alterations/adaptations in bodily
defense mechanisms. The concepts inclusive in the didactic
component (NURS 320) will be actualized on general surgical
nursing units and oncology units.
For this clinical I was at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital on
their inpatient post-surgical and bariatric unit. I also spent one
week in an OR rotation watching a craniotomy/lobectomy
procedure from start to finish, and the beginning and most of a
gastric bypass surgery. I performed assessments on patients,
did patient care plans, implemented interventions, cleaned
central lines, hung IVPB/IV fluids, gave medications including
subcut. Injections, IVPB, IV fluid, oral meds and more under
direct clinical/nurse supervision, took vitals, performed wound
care, changed wound ostomy appliances such as wound vacs
with ostomy nurses, flushed lines, cared for complex
multisystem comorbid patients, cleaned ostomy appliances,
inserted Foley catheters, assessed and dcs infiltrated IVs, and
more. We were in clinical for 8 hours a day once a week for 10
weeks for an estimated 80 hours of clinical experience. This

does not include time taken for preclinical paperwork/care plan


charting.
Psychiatric & Mental Health
Nursing Lecture & Clinical:
Fall 2013

Lecture: This lecture course focuses on psychotherapeutic


processes across the lifespan. Building on foundations from the
social and behavioral sciences, emphasis is on the use of the
nursing process in providing care to clients with acute and
chronic illness in a variety of psychiatric settings.
Clinical: This clinical course provides a mechanism for students
to perform mental health assessments, plan nursing care,
practice therapeutic communication techniques and observe
group processes in both inpatient and outpatient settings.
For this clinical I was at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital on
their adult psychiatric unit for 4 weeks, and spent 2 weeks on
their gerontology psychiatric unit. I performed psychiatric
evaluations on patients, observed behaviors in group settings,
and planned care for these patients. We were in clinical setting
for 6 hours once a week for six weeks for an estimated total of
36 clinical hours.

Nursing Science: Fall 2013

This course focuses on the theories and concepts utilized in


the scientific investigation of nursing practice. Content
emphasizes the development of skills necessary to be a
consumer of nursing research.

Therapeutic Diets II: Spring


2014

This course builds upon NURS 310 (therapeutic diets I) and


introduces the student to selected therapeutic diets. Emphasis
is placed on restrictive diets associated with maternal-infant
and selected medical-surgical processes.

Nursing Care of the


Childbearing Family Lecture
& Clinical: Spring 2014

Lecture: This lecture course focuses on the theoretical and


applied concepts related to the care of families experiencing
pregnancy and childbirth. Emphasis is on the dynamic familial,
societal, psychological and physiologic changes which occur in
this stage of family and personal development. The role of the
nurse as assistive and family-centered provider of care is a
major focus.
Clinical: This clinical course provides the opportunity for
planning and provision of nursing care to the childbearing
family. Emphasis is on the use of the nursing process to plan,
provide and coordinate quality care. Students are expected to

demonstrate responsibility and accountability for personal


actions as well as a respect for families and clients.
For this clinical I was at Chesapeake Regional Medical Center
and completed two weeks in mother/baby, two weeks in
nursery, and two weeks in labor/delivery. I was able to be a
part of two c-sections from admitting assessment to birth,
done several well-newborn assessments, and done a few postpartum assessments. This clinical is a six hour day, once a
week, for six weeks total for an estimated total clinical hours of
36 hours.
Adult Health Nursing II
Lecture & Clinical: Spring
2014

Lecture: This lecture course focuses on the adult experiencing


alteration/adaptation in organ and system mechanisms.
Emphasis is on the use of the nursing process to assist adult
clients to adapt to system related insults.
Clinical: (No course description) For this clinical I was at Bon
Secours Mary Immaculate Hospital on the bariatric/surgical
unit. I spent a day in the outpatient infusion center assisting
the nurses with IV central port access, flushing lines, and
getting and maintaining patients receiving blood products and
antibiotics. I also spent a week in the wound care clinic where I
watched and assisted in complex wound care and dressing
changes. This clinical is an 8 hour day, once a week for 10
weeks for an estimated total of 80 clinical hours.

2014

This is a spring break trip taken for nursing. We did various


teaching projects including a hand hygiene module and dental
care module. We also participated in multiple mobile care
clinics assessing patients for current issues and communicating
medication and medical needs to the local doctor. We
prepared and gave medications with the pharmacy as well.

This course addresses drug therapy and continued application


of the nursing process as related to drug therapy for clinical
situations involving individuals at all phases of the life cycle and
at different levels of wellness.

Nursing Care of Infants &


Children Lecture & Clinical:
Fall 2014

Lecture: This lecture course provides a basis for understanding


the nursing care of children of various ages. Emphasis is on the
use of the nursing process to assist children as they encounter
acute and chronic illness. The nurse's communication with and
education of the family and child as individuals or as part of a
group are discussed as a means of achieving the goal of
comprehensive individualized child care in the home and in
health care settings.
Clinical: This clinical course emphasizes the provision of
nursing care to infants and children suffering from acute and
chronic illnesses. Through the use of the nursing process,
students provide and coordinate care, serving as client
advocates. Students are expected to demonstrate
responsibility for personal actions related to the practice of
nursing.
For this clinical I was at Childrens Hospital for the Kings
Daughters. For this clinical I spent time caring for children with
various disease processes and at different developmental
stages. As a part of this clinical we also participated in the care
of daycare children to study developmental stages. This clinical
is an 8 hour day, twice a week for 5 weeks for an estimated
total of 80 clinical hours.

Adult Health Nursing III


Critical Care Lecture &
Clinical: Fall 2014

Lecture: This course focuses on the adaptation of clients to


critical illness. Content emphasizes concepts and theories of
crisis and the utilization of the nursing process with critically ill
clients who require assistance in adapting to their condition.
Clinical: This clinical course emphasizes the provision of
nursing care to clients who are critically ill. Through the use of
the nursing process, students will provide and coordinate care
and serve as client advocates in a variety of critical care
settings.
For this clinical I was at Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital
where I spent 1 week in the CCU, 2 weeks in the ICU, & 1 week
in the ER. I was able to care for a variety of patients with
critical illness and this clinical is where I discovered what I want
to do as a nurse. In the ER I was completely in my element and
received praise from several employees and patients. I was
able to start IVs, give meds, help provide trauma care, assist

with cardiac arrest, placed EKGs on patients and read results,


drew blood, assist with post-mortem care, educate patients,
and more. This clinical is an 8 hour day, twice a week for 5
weeks for an estimated total of 80 clinical hours.
Community Health I Lecture
& Clinical: Fall 2014

Lecture: This course focuses on family and community health


nursing. Content emphasizes concepts and themes of families
and communities and the use of the nursing process to assist in
promoting and maintaining health. Application of course
concepts through experience and interactions with health care
coalition groups is emphasized.
Clinical: (no course description) For this clinical experience I am
working with the Norfolk Drug Court aggregate. We attend
their group sessions and court appointments where we are
able to help provide health promotion and prevention teaching
and screenings. This first portion of clinical focused on
developing trust and professional and therapeutic relationships
with the aggregate as we assessed for health needs. For this
clinical I logged 36 clinical hours with the aggregate.

Leadership & Management:


Spring 2015

Theoretical and applied concepts of nursing leadership and


management within the health care setting. Focuses on the
management issues and responsibility of the new graduate in
contemporary professional nursing practice. Emphasis is on
communication and complex organization, decision-making,
leadership and motivation, techniques of delegation and
evaluation, conflict management and change, and risk
management and quality assurance.

Nursing Process in
Rehabilitation Lecture &
Clinical: Spring 2015

Lecture: This course focuses on using the nursing process to


prevent further dependence and restore maximum levels of
function to the client who has a physical disability.
Clinical: This clinical course emphasizes the provision of
nursing care to clients to prevent further dependence and
restore levels of function.
For this clinical I am at Riverside Rehabilitation Institute. For
this clinical we assisted the nurse with vitals, medications, and
also assisted our clients with physical, occupational, speech
and other therapies as needed. As part of the clinical we also
spent a 12 hour period with half of the time spent as a

wheelchair bound patient, the other 6 as a caregiver of a


wheelchair bound client. With this assignment we assessed
needs and experiences of patients and caregivers from a rehab
standpoint. This clinical was held twice a week for 3 weeks
lasting 6 hours for a total estimation of 36 clinical hours.
Community Health II Lecture
& Clinical: Spring 2015

Lecture: This course focuses on family and community health


nursing. Content emphasizes concepts and themes of families
and communities and the use of the nursing process to assist in
promoting and maintaining health. Application of course
concepts through experiences and interactions with health
care coalition groups is emphasized.
Clinical: (no course description). For this clinical experience I
continued my work with the Norfolk Drug court aggregate.
With this second stage we planned and implemented teaching
and other strategies focused from our assessment to assist the
aggregate in having better health outcomes. We were able to
provide education on access to healthcare in the area,
nutrition, and medication based topics focused on our primary
issue related to hypertension. For this clinical experience I will
log approximately 40 hours with the aggregate before
completion of the course.

Transition to Professional
Nursing Practice Lecture &
Clinical: Spring 2015

Lecture/Clinical (Practicum): This capstone clinical course


allows students to practice in selected areas. The focus of this
practicum is to enhance the clinical decision making and
nursing intervention skills of the senior student. This capstone
course must be completed in the last semester of the BSN
curriculum.
For this practicum, I will work one-on-one with a nurse on a
step down unit at Sentara Leigh. For this clinical experience my
preceptor with teach me patient care according to their
policies. Prior to completion of the course I will have a
minimum of 120 hours completed.
