What is our focus for today?

Incorporating Guided Math Workshop to enhance student
engagement and student achievement.
Incorporating math journals to enhance students problem
solving skills.

Rationale for Using Guided Math

Workshop and Math Journals
Increase the number of students who score exceeding levels on state
mandated assessments.
Quality teaching strategies
Student engagement
Increase student achievement
Meet the needs of ALL students
Opportunities for observation, communication, and collaboration

What is Guided Math Instruction?

Guided math instruction is a method of teaching in which
teachers assess their students formally or informally, and then
group them according to their proficiencies at a given skill. The
groups are homogeneous, yet fluid, as individual students level
of understanding change.

Levels of Support for Guided Math

Components
Instructional Approach

Teacher Activity

Level of Support

Activating Strategies
Modeling
Think-Alouds
Direct Instruction
Mini Lesson
Directed Review

Full support for all students by the

teacher specifying the approach to
problem solving or guiding the
conversation; teacher has the major
responsibility.

Small Group

Facilitates as students explore new

concepts and extends understanding
of previously introduced concepts.

Moderate level of support and

targeted instruction on student needs;
more responsibility is released to
students as the teacher provides
scaffolding for their efforts.

Math Workshop

Provides tasks for independent

individual; or group work by students.

Low level of support; tasks should be

those which students can complete
without teacher assistance;
responsibility is shifted to students.

Whole Group

How can I form my Guided Math Groups?

Group your students by ability
Observations
Paper and pencil assessment
Performance based assessment
Number of groups is up to teacher preference
3 groups
4 groups

Math Journals Boost Real Learning

When children write in journals

They are able to stretch their

thinking
They make sense of problems that
sometimes leave them confused or
frustrated
They examine, express, and keep
track of their reasoning.

By reading your students journals

You can evaluate their progress

Recognize students strengths and
needs
More adeptly differentiate your
instruction

Math Journals

Support a more complete understanding of concepts

Reinforce comprehension
Encourage use of diagrams
Can be used for documentation of research and experimentation during investigations
and to record processes, strategies and solutions.
Can be a great tool in differentiating your instruction.

Anchor Papers

Are examples of student work at different levels of performance that along with
rubrics, guide formative and summative assessments.
Can be a useful tool for helping teachers and students see and understand what
meeting common core standards look like.
School and districts can build their own collections of anchor papers and/ or use
reference example provided by resources like Exemplars

Ways to Use Anchor Papers in the

Math Workshop
Small Group Lesson
Independent Station
