What Is the Chinese Zodiac?

In the Western world, people look to the
monthly horoscopes based onstar sign
astrology to unlock the secret knowledge of
their futures.
However, in the East, Chinese astrology
uses the Chinese calendar according to
when you were born to predict your destiny
and help you identify the strengths and
weaknesses of your true self.
Chinese astrology is the oldest horoscope
system in the world. Its origins date back
to almost 3000BC. It was a system that
the Chinese believe they didnt work out
themselves, but that was imparted to them
by heavenly gods or deities to help them
lead more spiritual lives and be closer to the
heavens.
According to Chinese astrology, the
Chinese calendar is divided into a 60-year
cycle. Each 60-year period consists of
another two cycles that are separate, yet
influence each other:
1. Five Elements: Wood, Fire, Earth,
Metal and Water
2. 12 Zodiac Animal Signs: Rat, Ox,
Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse,
Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog and Pig.
The zodiac cycle repeats every 12 years starting

with the Rat sign. You are assigned an animal
sign according to the year you were born. For
example, everyone born in 2013 has the sign of
the snake.
Use the Chinese Calendar of Years on the next
page to work out your Chinese Zodiac Sign
according to your year of birth. However, if your
birthday is in January or February, make sure to
check the dates carefully, because the start of
the Chinese calendar doesnt start on the same
dates as the Western or Gregorian calendar.
For example, if you were born in 1970, your
zodiac sign would be Dog. But, if you were born
in January 1970, you would be a Rooster because
the Chinese year in 1970 started on February 6 of
the Gregorian calendar.

Due to differences in translations from the
original Chinese to English, there are various
words that people have used for each of the
signs.
For example:
Rat is sometimes translated as mouse.
Pig is sometimes translated as boar.
Rooster is sometimes translated as
chicken or hen.
Goat is somestimes translated as ram or
sheep.
However, even though the name of the Chinese
zodiac animal sign may change according to
translation, the characteristics and personality
traits of each one remains the same.

Of course there are similarities, but not

How Can I Overcome a Bad Match?

Traditional Chinese philosophy teaches balance
and virtue. If you and your partner are not the
perfect match or your sibling or work colleague
or other person whom you have regular contact
with is not a good match, here are a few tips to
improve your relationships:
In a Bad Match relationship, if the younger
person can respect and yield to the older person,
the relationship will be compatible.
In a Match relationship between sublings
and relatives, it is likely due to previous life
relationships and unresolved karmic debts. If
one person in the relationship can create an
environment of mutual respect by first showing
respect to the other, it will lead to a peaceful
home.
If a person with a Large Animal sign can yield to
a person of a Small Animal sign, then the noncompatibility can be transformed into a good
match.
Zodiac Pairs: Balance and Harmony

The ancient Chinese believed in the importance of
balance and harmonising with others. Accordingly,
the zodiac signs are also paired together to
harmonise the traits of each other.

Rat and Ox
The first pair is the Rat and the Ox. The Rat
represents wisdom and the Ox symbolises
diligence. Wisdom and diligence must go hand

person was solely diligent without intelligence,
that person would lack wisdom.
So both wisdom and diligence must be combined.

The second pair is the Tiger and Rabbit. The Tiger
represents bravery, while the rabbit represents
caution. Bravery and caution should go hand in
hand, so when a man has both character traits,
that man can be called courageous and wise.
Without caution, the brave become reckless, while

being blindly cautious would be considered timid.
These characteristics are also very important, so
they have been positioned as the second pair.
Dragon and Snake

The next pair of animals in the Chinese zodiac is
the Dragon and the Snake. The Dragon represents
toughness; the Snake represents flexibility.
The ancient Chinese believed that being firm while
being flexible is a very important character trait.
Horse and Goat

The next pair is the Horse and the Goat. The Horse
represents resoluteness and obstinacy, while the
Goat represents someone who is considerate.
If someone is bent on achieving his goals without
being aware of his environment, he is bound to
come across obstacles that prevent him from
reaching his target.
However, if a person is always looking for
consensus, but is otherwise without direction, he
also cannot achieve his goal. So being determined
and being considerate are both important traits
that go hand in hand. This reflects the fourth set
of expectations that the ancients had on Chinese
people.
Monkey and Rooster

The next pair is the Monkey and the Rooster.
The Monkey represents flexibility. There was no
clock in ancient times and the roosters crow
would determine the beginning of the day, so the
Rooster signifies stability.
Flexibility and stability must also go hand in hand.
Flexibility without stability would be wanting
and stability on its own is like a pool of stagnant
water. The best outcome comes from having both
stability and flexibility.
Dog and Pig

The final pair is the Dog and the Pig. The Dog
represents loyalty; the Pig represents affability.
A person who is loyal without being affable would
come across as being exclusionary. Conversely, a
person who is too easygoing without a sense of
loyalty can easily lose his principles.
Regardless of whether it is loyalty to the country,
loyalty to the team or loyalty to his or her ideals,
it must be combined with an element of affability.
That is what the ancient Chinese taught the
outside shows roundness, while the inside shows
square a person must be amiable, yet he must
have principles.

Rats are resourceful, shrewd and very capable.

A Legend of the Chinese Zodiac

A Heavenly Beginning
The Chinese zodiac is said to have been passed
down to humans in China from divine beings in
the heavens. It has since been used and passed
down for generations as an important aspect of
traditional Chinese culture.
Here is one of the legendary stories of how the
animals and their order were created as part of the
Chinese zodiac.

A long, long time ago, the Jade

Emperor in the heavens was celebrating
his birthday. Unfortunately, at that time,
there was no way of counting the years,
so he couldnt be sure how old he was.
He decided to come up with a method
to count the years.
He sent his servant into the forest to
announce that there would be a race
among the animals with a special prize
for the 12 winners.
The Jade Emperor
When the animals heard the news, they all

wondered what the prize would be.
On the day of the race, the emperor arrived
on a golden chariot. As he cleared his voice
to speak, the animals fell silent. There will
be a race across the river. The first 12 animals
to reach the opposite bank will have a year
named after them. The first year will be
named after the first animal across and so
on, said the emperor.
On the day of the race, all the animals lined
up on the starting line. With the drop of a
flag the race began and the animals sprinted
towards the river. The first to arrive were the
cat and the rat, but they soon realised that it
was further than they had thought. In fact, it
looked pretty dangerous.
They sat wondering what to do, when the
ox arrived. Suddenly, the rat had an idea.
Hey ox, do you mind carrying us across the
river? he asked. The ox was a kind animal, so
he readily agreed.
The cat and the rat jumped on the oxs head
and together they crossed the river. Just
as they were about to make landfall on the
opposite the bank, the rat jumped off the
oxs head, making him the first one across.
Congratulations! said the emperor. The

first year shall be named after you. The ox
was furious about being cheated, but as the
second animal across he got the second
year.
There was a long gap until the tiger arrived,
exhausted after a difficult swim. The emperor
was pleased with his efforts and named the
third year after him. The tiger was followed
by the rabbit, which surprised the emperor.
Everyone knows rabbits cant swim. Surely
you cheated!
The rabbit explained that it was true, he
couldnt swim, but he had managed to cross
the river by jumping across the stones and
sailing on a log. This impressed the emperor,
who awarded him the fourth year.
The emperor was delighted with what he
had seen so far. All the animals had shown
tremendous resourcefulness to cross the
river, but he had expected the dragon, which
could both swim and fly, to easily win. Yet
the dragon was nowhere in sight.
Just then, a shadow descended over the
animals as the dragon swooped in to land.
You finally made it. Where have you been?
asked the emperor. I had to make it rain and
then I saw a rabbit trying to cross the river
on a log, so I had to create some wind to
help him cross, said the dragon. Very well. Youre

the fifth animal, so you get the fifth year, said the
emperor.
The successful animals gathered on the bank
and watched as the rest of the contestants swam
across. Before long, the horse came into view.
The horse was swimming furiously and was just
about to make land when a snake slithered out
from under his hooves. The horse was so surprised
that he reared up in shock, allowing the snake to
slither across the line for sixth place. The horse got
seventh and was happy enough with that.
Then came the most amazing sight of an amazing
day a rooster, a monkey and a goat travelling
together on a raft. The rooster had found the
raft and the other two had helped to navigate
and clear away reeds. When they finally touched
down on the bank, the emperor was delighted.
I have never seen such a remarkable display of
teamwork! and with that he granted the goat the
eighth year, the monkey the ninth and the rooster
the tenth.
There was long gap until the next animal arrived.
The emperor was beginning to wonder if any
other animals would make it across and if he had
made his challenge too difficult. But he neednt
have worried because just then the dog appeared,
nearing the shore.
The dog explained that the water had been so

clean that he couldnt resist bathing in it. The
emperor laughed and duly awarded him the
eleventh year.
So it just remained to be seen which animal would
get the final place. The animals were discussing
the subject when the pig appeared on the bank,
earning him the twelfth year.
The emperors trumpet players issued a
fanfare and the emperor began to speak.
Congratulations to all the animals that made
it across the river today. Your names will be
remembered forever because of your amazing
efforts today, he said.
But whatever happened to the cat that had sat
on the oxs head? The rat pushed him back into
the river and he was swept back to the other
bank, and since that day, rats and cats have been
enemies.
