Sample Statistical Questions Comparing

Populations
Mathematics 7th Grade
R.Banos Mathematics DMMS
1. How many people grew up with a first language other than
English at vs ?
2. How many cities have people from Tiburon lived in vs people
from another town such as ?
3. How many young people have travelled outside of the USA in
vs ?
4. Are students at Del Mar more or less likely to own a cell phone
than students at ? (6th graders vs 8th graders?/ girls vs boys?)
5. How tall are members of the basketball team compared to
members of the soccer team?
6. How many separate, extracurricular activities do 6h graders
participate in compared to 8th graders? (girls vs boys?)
7. MAKE UP YOUR OWN! (Have Teacher approve it first.)
8. How much time (in minutes or hours) do Del Mar students spend
Reading at home compared to Watching TV?
Have fun with this project. Ask a meaningful question, something you
really want to know.
Beware of BIAS: If your population is Del Mar students, are there
certain groups that would (have a bigger t-shirt size/have their own cell
phone)? What about 8th graders? Would they be more likely to own a
cell phone? Would their t-shirt sizes be larger than the typical 6th
grader? When youre collecting your data, you need to make sure
youre not just targeting one subset of each population. For example, if
you interview students walking out of Advanced Algebra, its likely that
all your answers will come from 8th graders and your sample might be
BIASED.
YOUR POSTER WILL INCLUDE (NOTE: ONE POSTER PER STUDENT,
NOT TEAM!):
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.

STATISTICAL QUESTION
HYPOTHESIS
DATA FROM AT LEAST 40 RESPONDENTS FOR EACH POPULATION
DESCRIPTION OF HOW YOU COLLECTED YOUR DATA
ONE AREA OF POSTER DEDICATED TO DATA INCLUDING:
a. MEAN, MEDIAN, RANGE, MEAN ABSOLUTE DEVIATION, OUTLIERS for each
population.

b. EXPRESS DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE TWO GROUPS AS A MULTIPLE

MEASURE OF VARIABILITY (Example: The mean height of players on the
basketball team is 3 greater than the mean height of players on the
soccer team, about twice the variability (mean absolute variation).)
6. CONCLUSION BASED ON THE DATA COLLECTED INCLUDING THE SHAPE OF THE
TWO DATA SETS (skews, normal distribution, uniform)
7. SELF-GRADED RUBRIC

7th Grade STATISTICAL POSTER PROJECT

Be sure that you read the other side of this page carefully before
proceeding!
This is the first step toward completing your STATISTICAL POSTER
PROJECT that is
due on ____________________________________________.
What is your STATISTICAL QUESTION?
EXAMPLES:
1. What is the percentage distribution of preferences for holiday
destinations?
2. What is the likelihood that people will choose to shop at discount
stores over non-discount stores even knowing that merchandise quality
is usually better at the non -discount store?
3. On a semantic scale of 1 to 10 , where would you place yourself in
the good deeds you do for others during a calendar year, say from
Christmas to Christmas?
4. On a scale of one to five, what is your opinion of the effect most TV
programming has on teenagers, where 1 is a positive affect, 5 is a
negative affect?

What are the 2 POPULATIONS you will compare?

LIST them here:
POPULATION 1:
POPULATION 2:
The population is the whole group from which the sample is taken. For
example, you ask 50 randomly chosen people at Woodlands in Tiburon

what their job is and you compare that to 50 random people who are
asked the same question at Safeway in San Rafael. Your sample sizes
are 40 and your populations are all the people at Woodland and all the
people at Safeway or 100 people. If you ask 40 people at Safeway at
4PM 6 PM would you get the same response as you would by asking
40 people at 9 AM 11 AM on the same day? Why? Why not? What
might skew your results?
