Autonomic Nervous System which is a functional division not a structural division

Consists of efferent neurons control 3 different types of cells

o Smooth muscle systems
o Cardiac muscles
o Gland cells
Control all these without the involvement of consciousness
Can be divided into 2 subsystems
o Sympathetic nervous system
Starts in the middle of the spinal cord
Fight or flight
Will cause lots of changes in the body which will help you deal
with threatening situations
o Parasympathetic nervous system
Starts either in the brainstem or at the bottom of the spinal cord

Receptors:
-

Cholinergic (acetycholine) how is it synthesized? (another video)

o Nicotinic receptor (ion channel a sodium-potassium channel)
No G-proteins
Nn (activating a sweat gland)
o Autonomic function

Receptor sites will determine what will happen next
Musculonic
Yes G-proteins
Adrenergic (norepinephrine and epinephrine) all with G-proteins
o Alpha-adrenergic
